I keep seeing people bitching on social media about being 'stuck behind [insert expletive] bikes', however it occurs to me that while driving I spend far more time stuck behind other cars than bikes. Are there any stats available to back this up (or is it just too obvious to bother studying)?

I spend far more time stuck behind other cars than bikes.

Do you drive an Audi and have your four circles taking up the full rear view mirror of the people doing the speed limit in inferior cars?

The only thing that would come from such a study is that people are dicks on roads regardless of vehicle.

I was once behind a man who let a horse and cart out of a side road and onto the main road.
We then had to follow the horse and cart for a mile before it turned back off.
Of course the horse and cart were entitled to be on the road and it was very kind of the car in front to let him out.
Did I whinge about it and nearly have a heart attack with rage..of course I did.

not to mention that as soon as they've got past said 'efin cyclist whey are then immediately 'stuck' behind either the car in front, or a red light 😉

You don't get 'stuck' behind things on the road, you have to adjust your speed and heading to deal with other road users and infrastructure, then you continue on your journey as before, with little or no net impact on journey time. But the kind of people who make such complaints never seem to realise this.

What a bizarre comment - are the roads where you drive empty like the ones in car adverts? Or is it only round here where there is traffic congestion and people doing 40 in a NSL?

Allan, what I meant was that I spend more time in slow moving or stationary traffic caused by the volume of traffic etc, rather than 'inferior' cars going too slowly/sticking to speed limits 😆

you aren't stuck in traffic, you are traffic.

its alway satisfying to cruise by a car at the next set of lights if they've passed you like a ****.

In cities, sitting behind a cycle for a while for the opportunity to overtake does not affect overall journey time, the delays that affect journey times are in queues where traffic demand is close to or exceeding capacity of the available traffic lanes, often at junctions/signals which are usually the bottlenecks in the traffic network.

In well established reliable traffic modelling methods a normal car takes up 1 passenger carrying unit (PCU) of capacity whereas a bicycle takes up 0.2 PCU of space [url= http://www.transport-links.org/transport_links/filearea/publications/1_668_pa1292_1993.pdf ]more info![/url]. Therefore everybody who shifts from a single occupancy car to cycling on the road frees up 0.8 PCU of capacity on the road network, or to put it another way, takes up only a 5th the capacity space on the road that they would in a car.
