Having just bought my first ever 10 speed bike I am somewhat confused by the joining links on the sram chain. I can't get it apart although it looks like the 9 speed one - does it come apart in the same way by hand or is the tool essential? In practice can they be reused or not? ( I know its not reccomended) ruddy expensive at £7 a replacement if they have to be replaced every time I lube the chain.
Help a confused old luddite please
I've got SRAM and KMC 10 spd chains and i find that both sets of quick links are stiffer than the old 8/9 speed ones.
I use my Knippex adjustable pliers on them if I'm at home. On the trail the might be a bit tricky without a tool.
Afaik it's only 11/12 spd that are not reusable.
The 10 speed Sram links are not designed to be reused. You can get them apart by using a quick link tool or some molgrips. KMC 10 speed links are now re-usable.
can I use kmc quick links on a sram chain?
- I really don't want to go back to using oil on chains so much prefering the boil in the tin wax
You can use 9sp quick links on a 10sp chain no problem.
I've not had any problems reusing them on the same chain, I wouldn't move one over to a new chain or between chains.

can I use kmc quick links on a sram chain?
Yes
A couple of methods:
That SRAM video is for powerlinks which they use up to 9spd. The 10spd and above are called powerlock and you'd really struggle to get them apart without tools.
I can open 9sp links easily. 10 speed the same method?

10 speed the same method?
They join and come apart the same way but are a *lot* tighter. Come apart easily with molgips across the diagonal.
TJ, if you need to undo them out on the trail, a wee section of gear cable is handy, just wrap it round and pull tight and they pop apart.
The 10 speed links work fine on 11 speed chains too.
