Hi all,
Got a set of Marzochhi DJ1 forks (2015). Want to replace the oil. One side has an open bath, so about 150ml. Other side is just for lubrication.
From what I've read, they want somewhere between 10W and 20W (apparently thicker oil will help reduce the horrid top out they sometimes have).
I'm planning to get motorbike fork oil - but a bit confused about the "5W30" type terminology. I understand that the number before the W is for winter, ie cold whether viscosity. But if a oil just has a "5W" type terminology, is that referring to the winter or non-winter viscosity?
i.e. if everything else is equal, is a 5W30 more or less viscous than a 10W oil?
Thanks,
Duane.
YOu cannot compare them. One is multigrade, one is straight oil the 5/30 will be thinner when cold, thicker when hot that the 10W
I have never seen multigrade fork oil
The stuff with two grades is engine oil I think. Those are the hot and cold viscosities, because it's obviously thinner at hot engine temps (I think).
Fork oil only has one weight on the bottle.
You need suspension specific oil not motor oil.
Also thicker oil will effect compression as well as rebound damping so they may end up too stiff as well a slower rebounding which will reduce the top out but make the fork feel pants
Multi-grade fork oil!

True, but this is a dirt jump fork, so I want it nearly solid anyway.
Fair enough, wack some 20wt in there then.
Silkolene is (probably) a better quality fork oil. (and also available in thicker weights*)
* if you buy a litre of 5w and a litre of 20w you can mix them to use on pretty much every future (non DJ) fork service. uppers and lowers 😉

Yes please pops!
Looks like the Silkolene is the one to go for, cheers.
Just looking at the service manual for my Pike RCT3 on my MTB. It looks like I need 10ml of 0W30 in each lower leg.
a. That seems like a very small amount
b. What is 0W30 in non-multi-grade oil numbers..?
Or is this just for lubrication so anything around 0-20W will be fine?
10ml of Silcolene 5w fork oil is all you need in each leg.
Would 15w be too thick?
