My freewheel stopped doing it's job properly so I whipped it out to see what was going on and that is where my confusion starts.  The part I took out is this:

https://s31.postimg.cc/phfu60rzf/IMG_20180415_164138574.jp g" alt="" width="600" height="800" />

It came off a road wheel with a shimano 10sp cassette on it.  The last time I replaced one of these it was the older bolt on shimano freehub body and another set of wheels I have has a DT hub with splines to receive a DT freehub rather than the pawls of a Shimano hub.  This is the first time I've had to replace one of these

So, the big question is do I just buy any old 'cassette body for shimano 10speed' or are there differences to be aware of?  If I look at Novatec parts for example there appear to be at least 3 freehubs that would match (A2,B1 and D) without any indication of what the difference are.  Can I buy any old 10spd freehub with pawls and are there any particularly good makes

Thanks all

Almost entirely yes...if you have a steel cassette, don't get an alloy freehold as it'll get chewed and destroyed. If an alloy cassette then an allow frehub is fine.

There's your problem right there... nothing worse than cosmetic damage*

I whipped it out

Not in public I hope!

* to avoid confusion, this is not really true, although see below.

In answer to your question.. get a noisy hub to scare off dangerous wildlife, and you will feel better for having a shiny new part.

No, I don't think so.  The actual freehub body is often specific to the hub.  They often fit different size end caps/axle parts etc.

The splines themselves will obviously be standard to suit a Shimano cassette but the internal details can be quite different.

If you have identified the hub and the compatible freehubs, go with one of those.

But as per above, a little chewed up doesn't make any difference other than to make it a little harder getting cassettes on or off.  Unless it's really chewed up and the sprockets are loose even with the lock ring done up tight.

It's a wheelsmith hub and if I go to their site it says 'Spare Freehub body for Wheelsmith hubs only' which I guess answers my question.  I was wondering if there was a 'standard' but I'm not sure there is as when I hunt I find specific bodies for Hope and Nukeproof so it doesn't look like there is.  Might just need to order from Wheelsmith which isn't a problem - was just interested in what the options were

edit: the problem wasn't that is was chewed up.  I've take a file to sort out the worst of that.  The problem was that it was no longer freewheeling properly
