Ive seen somewhere before a stuff sack with a one-way material in the base that remains waterproof but allows air to escape during compression. Anyone know the brand and product? my jedi-googling skillz are letting me down...

cheers

Oh and found these while looking. Look amazing:

EDIT: The exped ones use a valve not a one way membrane

Podsacs do them with an eVent bottom panel which lets the air escape:

It isn't a one way valve though, the air can suck back in (hence the reason for the compression straps). This is always the case with air-permeable membranes.

IMO the event fabric ones are no better than the standard Exped's, you just need to use a bit more thought with the expeds.

I bought the Pod's and was somewhat disappointed - this is because I didn't get the compression straps but the difference you'll get between the event ones and a standard exped is minimal - maybe a bigger difference on bigger items though.

I think this is what you're after:

The medium size was about right to get an alpkit pipedream 600 into.

yeah sea2summit are the ones

they're good, i got a couple free in a race a few years ago

be aware though they do re-expand
and I'm not sure I'd trust it on the back of a bike rack with a down bag in not to get wet tbh

for that get a thicker one alpkit etc.
personnel exped are too light for that too IMHO
exped's are great for in a rucksack though

all depends on what you want it for

cheers guys. Yep, I think it's the seatosummit ones Id seen before.

Is eVent a bit flaky on the waterproof front? Would it make more sense to put a normal compression sack in a waterproof roll top like the alpkit ones?

Im playing with a design in my head for a bar mounted bivvy kit bag (down bag/bivvy sac/tarp/pegs), water proof and compressible...

I like your thinking. Couple of points on your design though

There's a fair chance the bivvy bag will get wet in use. I'd not want to be storing it in the same compartment as a down sleeping bag. So - as long as the down bag bag is watertight, I don't think the rest matters.

Poles and pegs are better outside the bag as they have a habit of wearing through the material from the inside if there are any pressure points at all.

the outer of the bag would have web straps to which you attach rolled up bivvy bag and tarp. little pocket for para-cord and pegs. inner compression bag only for down bag to keep it dry.

basically a grab-and-go bivvy kit.

maybe something to mount a lamp body to too.

You shouldn't really have any problems with eVent being waterproof ... it's pretty much the industry standard for waterproof / breathable fabric.

somarich - the gourdon is kind of there, but too big.

But something about 10-15 litre with external lashing, and able to fold down to 300mm in length. Then marry it up with a rixen & kaul klickfix mount...
