I've got several 1by set-ups now (Czar XX1 36t 42/10) (Spearfish XX1 32t shimano 36/11) (Ragley TD1 Raceface Narrow/Wide 32t Shimano 36/11)

People/friends keep asking what they should go to.

It depends on what you ride, how you ride and where you ride.

So for simple's sake I've knocked up an excel to help guide/debate.

There is some mileage and opinion on what is suitable terrain (We ride Sherwood & The Peaks, so good diversity) and what is a conditioned rider ... but in broadstrokes.

This is what I reckon.

Chime in.

Firslty it's "The Peak", not a plural. Although there are "The Dark Peak" and "The White Peak", so there are two, go figure.

Secondly, pahhhhh, I used to use 1x9 with a 38t chainting and 11-34 cassette before it was popular. I also had knee surgery 2 years later so maybe that should be advised against! What you can/can't do is going to be entirely dependant on the individual circumstances and preferances. I would beligerantly grind a singlespeed arround the Peak at 30rpm as I really like the hastle-free riding that singlespeeding allows and have a high threshold for pain! My missus won't ride Swinely without a Granny ring.

Very clear but personally I'd prefer it in gear inches and look at the speed for a cadence of 100rpm.

Let me know where to find a 28t thick thin!

Hmm just checked, shouldn't be too hard if based on a specific wheel/tyre combo.

28 tooth with 11-36 out back is good on a 29er. It is slightly (1 tooth) lower gearing than 32 tooth chainring on a 26" bike. It lets you spin up most things without turning yourself inside out, whilst at the same time means you can do 20mph in top gear... IMHO a good range.
