700 X 30/32 ish.

Cheap.

Semi-slick / file tread, possibly with a bit more tread on the shoulders. Options for lighter trails in better/dryer weather.

Cheap

Durable-ish, but not silly-heavy.

Oh. And cheap.

Go ...

The Vittoria Hypers on PX are great, surprisingly capable off road if it's dry, and go like a rocket on tarmac! Otherwise Conti sport contacts but they're a bit heavier.

I would not suggest to anyone that Vittoria Voyager Hyper is a good commuting tyre. 7 punctures in 8 months? Jog on! Previous rubber gave ~1 in 12 months. I've now gone nuclear with some Marathon+. Couldn't give a toss about the weight difference.

Shwalbe CX comp?

I had a pair in 30 years ago, just bought some in 35 for the new commute as it has a bit of off road and towpath.

Can get them for a tenner

The responses to this thread show that the answer is "it depends".

I'd just add that many of the cheap tyres I tried ended up being made of some kind of hard plastic, or seemingly pre-embeded with puncturing items, so I get more pricey ones these days.

Specialized Infinity in either Armadillo or Flak Jacket.

I have 3 bikes with these on, 2 with 32's and 1 with 38's.

I have used these for a few years, never had a puncture in any of them.

Their not light but they do roll well and have enough tread to be able to enjoy dry trails.

Schwalbe cx comp are good you might find them to knobby for town riding I found them great summer tyre off-road also Conti cyclocross speeds are good and Bonty H1

Conti speeds are cheap at CRC for wire they are good in winter to.

Some good suggestions. Cheers.

Currently running 35 Conti Cyclo X-Kings which have been great actually as a do it all tyre in a range of conditions (commuting -> 3PCX!) whilst my Hack has been my only #dirtydropbargoodness bike. But now I also have the Pickenflick for more playful riding, I just want the Hack as commuter/winter road bike with close-fitting full length mudguards, so faster-rolling, narrower tyres preferred, but still with a bit of volume and the option to play on the (easy & dryish) dirty stuff on the way home. CX Comps look to fit the bill.

In contrast to the above - Vitoria Voyager 35s (tubeless) for 3 years and 20000km with no punctures.

I use landcruisers for my commuter. You can get more puncture resistant or lighter faster rolling tyres but for £14 a tyre they hit the sweet spot for me

I've used Landcruisers as my go-to cheap and tough general use tyre a lot over the years (search around and you can pick them up for £20 a pair!), and if they did them in a 30/32, I'd have them. Really want to come down from a 35.

conti protection tyres are great in my book.  I pulled more than a dozen bits of glass out of mine after a years commuting and no punctures - none got thru the kevlar belt.

I'm daily commuting on a steel framed gravel bike. Mix of tarmac and Sustrans kitty litter railway trails. Running 100g 'lite' Conti tubes .

The Conti cyclocross speeds in folding bead are a brilliant tyre - light (350g) and grippy in snow, gravel, rain. I've had numerous pairs in the last few years.

Changed this week to the 35c Victorria Hypers as raved about above and I'm really disappointed with them. They are a claimed 400g but they really feel a lot more. The rotational difference is really marked between the Conti especially when climbing. They also feel a lot 'deader' when smashing and bouncing off broken tarmac as though there is far more weight in them.

Grip is obviously reduced off road especially in greasy surface mud (as expected) and ice.

You can feel their lower rolling resistance but only on the flats when cruising and upto speed- the trade off in increased climbing effort isn't worth it.

Punctured on the 3rd day so not impervious

The Conti's are £20 from wiggle

Small update on the Vicctoria Hypers - I started off using them at my usual 75/80psi that I run the Conti's at, I dropped the pressures as an experiment and end up at 50psi. Rolling resistance doesn't feel to be any different to the higher pressures whereas the Contis feel sluggish unless at high pressure.

Comfort is far improved at the lower pressures - broken tarmac etc are smoother.

Tried to run them tubeless on my Hunts but gave up defeated.

In summary-they've earned a 2nd chance.

Bit of thread resurrection ...

The CX Comp's have proved to be utter sh**! Don't roll particularly well, feel very wooden and dead, and having repaired the 8th puncture in just the last 3 - 4 weeks (only riding the bike max 2 days a week), I've taken them off and will likely bin them.

Just put some Conti 28c slick tyres on for now as that's all I had in the garage, but might try out the Continental cyclo-cross Speed's in due course ...
