Does anyone have a recommendation for a mixed use SPD shoe? I want something to use on my gravel bike and also for commuting. Currently got two different shoes, a giro savix which is too road orientated (great for zwift and summer road, no good for walking to school) and an old Shimano am flat SPD shoe (great for walking crap for pedaling). Looking for something in the middle that I won't ruin walking in but has good power transfer. Any recommendations? Have seen the giro berm and rumble as well as the northwave outcross range. Anyone got either of those? Doesn't need to be winter proof as I have bontrager omw's for that.

Giro Terraduro is worth a look. Has a vibram sole so should be fairly hard wearing. A mate has the rumble and seems to like them and the styling is a bit more casual.

Have you looked at Quoc? They have a Gravel show but the Tourer is comfy and has (IMO) a great retro look to it

The Quoc shoes look lovely. Looks like the tourer is discontinued unfortunately and replaced by the gravel shoe. This looks great but a bit more than I was planning to spend (I keep looking at it though!).

The Terraduro looks like it could do the trick.

I’ve got terraduros and they’re good on the bike and ok walking short bits off the bike. Still not really a shoe I’d go for a walk in despite the Vibram sole.

The walk is only a few hundred meters but it's enough to destroy the sole of road slippers when done every day. The more critical bit would be stopping suddenly on the commuting bike (surly big dummy) as it's very heavy, especially with a child or two on it.

I've tried various from Shimano, Carnac, Specialised, five ten & Mavic and the Mavic were the most comfy but fell apart after a year of commuting, couldn't get on with the insole shape of the Carnac or Spesh. Currently using Shimano touring spds, comfy to wear and walkable but I dont think they are stiff enough as they become uncomfy after an hour or so of pedalling.

I have some inexpensive ones from Merlin and they are spot on (I think they are Spuik or diadora..)

I have been using a pair of Giro Privateer R mtb shoes (HV fit for wide flipper feet types).
Really like them and off the bike they are not bad for walking about in. They also don't look too 'cycling shoe'.

no, it's still a cycling shoe and looks like one but it doesn't force the slippery death waddle like a road or rigid XC shoe if you need to be a biped for a bit. I orginally bought them for MTB but am using flats for that now so they've become by gravel / commute bike shoe of choice now. Really like them but maybe should have got the wider fit.

No one local seems to stock both giro and Shimano. Think might order the terraduros and XC5s and see which one feels the best. The five 10s are too skate shoe like, I can't see them giving the support I want. The privateer looks a bit too bike slipper.

Must stop looking at the Quoc site!

https://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-xc5-spd-mountain-bike-shoes-2018-109456.html are £68, looked at them many times and can't decide whether to click the trigger or buy some 3-bolt pedals and full-on road shoes.

Most comfortable shoes i have and use for everything now are my Specialized Rime, especially if you have wider feet (find Giro shoes personally too narrow often).

@n0b0dy0ftheg0at even cheaper on CRC. Can't decide if I can live with that colour or want to spend more for black.

Just switched from a set of Pearl Izumi X-Projects to a set of Shimano XC5s. The Pearls were ok, just started giving me numb toes, had to go up 2 sizes to get ones that fitted. The XC5 are a size up but have been great on/off the bike with Time Atac pedals

Well I've ordered a pair of each (gone for the fetching camo XC5s). Stupid CRC wouldn't accept my BC code though.

You need a £150+ basket at CRC these days for a whopping £10 discount using BC membership... Not quite the 10% it used to be off a £99+ basket!

I use Pearl Izumi X alp on my gravel/commuting bike and for touring. Really pleased with them.

Was a £250 basket and still didn't work. Must happen often as live chat had a canned response. Either get BC to issue a new code or screen grab BC account and contact CRC help desk

I use my Giro Rumble for commuting, I’d imagine they’re quite well suited to gravel stuff too. Worth a look.
