You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Currently tying myself in knots trying to find a commuter/winter bike. I currently have a hardtail and full sus bikes, but would prefer not to use, for reasons of wear and tear/ maintainence.
I have up to £1000 to spend.
Would like:
Easily maintained
Relatively lightweight
Adaptable (must do bridleways as well as road)
Not sure on:
Drop bars or flat. I've never ridden a drop bar bike (shock horror!)
Hub gears (reliability/weight)
Singlespeed ( Knees!)
Building my own (not sure of differing standards)
I am reasonably competent at building bikes, I built my other 2, but know nothing of road bike standards.
Please help STW, you're my only hope!
i just picked up a saracen levarg flat bar which im really liking, the RRP is just under your budget, but i managed to find an ex display
comes in at just over 11kg without pedals
everything is adequate.. rides very well on tarmac, amusing on dirt
was also looking at Kona Units (bit more expensive) and Marin DSX before i found the saracen
I went through the same process last year and settled on getting a Cube Road SL Race. I didn't want a drop bar for commuting, there are too many tram tracks and I don't feel as comfortable in town around kids and cars when braking on the hoods as with a flat bar, despite the width difference.
105 groupset made the decision for me on model. It's fast and comfortable for up to a couple of hours.
Heartily recommended it.
There is another topic on here with an Editor - Alfine and belt drive. They look great but enter the next budget range so were a no for me.
Cube Road SL Race
+1
Love mine
Cube road race SL looks a great option. Stock not looking good though.
Also like the look of the cube Hyde. Seems to be the same frame as the Editor but £500 less.
