TLDR, Are new rims on this anything more than a waste of money?

Really pleased with my new commute scoot, and the wheels that came with it are absolutely fine. Well better than that actually because the front is a dynamo and the rear 8 speed Alfine. But I do like building wheels, (all my other bikes have hand-made's by me) and don't get the opportunity very often. So should I give this one the new rims treatment? Maybe some narrow 29er DT Swiss MTB rims, or Mavic Open Pro UST's as they will take a nice wide tyre. Hmm...

Silver spokes obviously, because they sparkle in the sunshine.

If you fancy something a bit different, have a look at Exal for rims.

I've found them bombproof heavily loaded on rough stuff. I've got the DC19 in 36 hole, 26" flavour and just cannot fault them.
Double walled, double eyeletted.
I think they'll last forever.
Cheap too.

Spa have a good selection of tough rims at various prices.

Lovely bike btw, understated, very practical. You could ride that anywhere.

Try some Marathon Supreme folders btw, bloody marvellous things, tough yet fast.

Odd - my previous reply disappeared. Here we go again!

I don't think I need bombproof, the Bontrager rims on there are that, and I'm not a wheel-smasher, which is why I'm thinking of the DT Swill/Mavic options.

And those Schwalbe tyres look just the ticket, although I've long been a fan of the Conti Contact range which have a similar description.

Sue has the Contis on the AWOL.
They are indeed most excellent.
The tread always seems to be full of gravel though!

My current rear wheel toughness test is filling the panniers with bottles of ALDI Vintage Cider then riding home via the park.
Better safe than sorry. 🙂

I'm not sure I see the point here. Surely just use those wheels, if/when they die then replace the rims at that stage?

I like how the black spokes look on that thing, too, although my black spokes have developed some rust-spots at the intersections which is annoying. I guess painted spokes maybe aren't stainless underneath?

Well colour me surprised. First time on here the concensus is don't bother or a bargain option. 😆

But probably not the first time an OP has ignored sage advice! 👍

Deep section AliExpress carbon FTW surely?

Gotta get all the Aero-gains on the commute, don't want to be late to work...
