My current pair of Specialized SPD commuting shoes have done me great service for a number of years now, but they are starting to show signs of their tough life, with the heal wearing through and parts of the toe rubber starting to crack and come off.
They get daily use on my commute in all weathers and have been through one Swedish winter (salt and all) but I suspect they might be on their last adventure. At least they don't smell. Well, smell _too_ bad anyway.
I run normal SPD pedals (Shimano m520s) on all my bikes, so keeping it simple and using normal SPDs would be good. The current shoes are more touring style than disco slipper, so are actually half decent to walk around in. The laces can be a faff though and having something a little easier to get on and off would be nice. Not sure about _only_ velcro though.
Anyone got recommendations? The local selection seems to be Northwave or Scott with maybe a bit of Decathlon thrown in. I have no idea where I can find a similar pair of Spesh ones.
Giro Terraduro have a normal-ish sole and SPD compatible , so are OK for walking around in.
I have them in plain black - can't comment on suitability for a Swedish winter - you may need MTB boots for that. I have used some overshoes in shi77y weather.
Nortwave mtb shoes here. 2 velcro straps, not a problem.
The winter is not really the problem. I have overshoes for when it gets really cold, but it was only about -15 or so last year in town, so not too bad for just socks.
Will have a look at the Giro stuff. I'd not thought of them.
I like my terraduros, but I think the ratchet system rules them out as a walking around town shoe.
I quite like the Giro Rumble - looks a bit like a trainer, SPD compatible but I haven't tried them so not a recommendation.
I have been using a pair of black Giro Privateer r hv for commute.Found them good for walking when off the bike and they don't look too 'cycling' shoe.I went for the wider hv fit,it's just right for my fat feet.
I have a pair of Giro Rumble and I like them, I have to walk a few hundred yards from the bike shed to the changing room at work and they are good to walk in.
That is my main thing, well, stairs as well. It's not often I go into town just for the hell of it, but having somehting that's not horrific to walk around in would be nice. But then, having a more rigid sole would be nice...
