Any recommendtions? I'm hoping to put some road miles in over the winter and so will need some lights. 99% of the roads are unlit, so I'll need something decent. What about something like this?

I'd go for a brighter rear light. Recommend the Smart Lunar R1, which can be found for about £11 upwards

Sounds like you need to see ahead aswell as being seen, I use the exposure flash flare set, very bright and rechargable, then use one of the CREE XM-L T6 They're pretty bright so I tend to dip when oncoming traffic and switch it off in built up lit areas.

Edit: I bought mine a few years ago so I'm sure you can get better and cheaper now.

I bought something very similar off ebay a year or two ago, they are ok lights for the money but I wouldn't want to use them on unlit roads.

Go for one of the Cree XML T6 lights that rewski mentions as they will be much brighter ( I use something similar on my commutes now )

As above, I have two of those lights which I use on lit roads. I also have a helmet mounted light which I use when I get to the unlit roads. The one linked above would be ideal. So two of the ones you've linked to, one of the ones rewski linked too and I'd add one of these

As a regular rural commuter on unlit roads I eventually purchased an Exposure Strada for the front; more money but IMO a good investment for the amount of use I get out of it (approx 2000km through the dark months each year). Good light penetration and works well with the dip-switch.

On the back I have one fixed (cheapo battery one) and one flashing (Light & Motion usb rechargeable) light plus a cheapo battery flashing light on my helmet.

Another vote for cheap flashing helmet lights for when you are around traffic, makes you much more visible. Think mine are Smart ones
