What are the best value / recommended spd/ flat pedals out there to go on my commuting bike to cover me for days when I want to just leave my cycling shoes at home and wear trainers.?

Not a vast choice, just get the shimano combined ones if you're only going to use them for communiting.

I Use wellgo Magnesium DH pedals spd One side and large platform flats with pins on the other I find them very good plus there quite light

Shimano M424, or maybe the T400 version as it's got reflectors built in for the commute?

I'm not convinced of the Shimano offerings for much more than popping to the shop without spds tbh. Granted, I do have M530's on my CX but that's more because they were cheaper than M520's that week than because i thought the platform was useful.

The Wellgo's mentioned above sound more like what you want, but being magnesium are going to show off how good you are at avoiding pedal strikes or not as well as probably being more than then twenty odd quid range the rest are usually in.

Any particular reason not to want spd shoes for the commute? I jsut keep a set of smart shoes and a pair of scruffy Converse at work and always wear spd shoes...

The XT trecking pedals are rather nice.

Shimano A530 are pretty good. They are SPD one side, flat on the other. With a fairly grippy, metal platform.

I'm happy with my Shimano A530s too.

just ride flats to work then. there's no great advantage in using SPDs commuting.

Shimano M324 are excellent. Used them on and off road and on the tandem. Teen 2 now has them on his road and mtb bikes for school runs, cafe runs and red runs.

I used them to learn to ride off road before moving to XTR double-sided spds. They allow you to clip out, flip the pedal over and ride on the flats for the techy stuff.

They sit neutrally rather than flat or spd up, the bearings on ours seem to last forever, you can file the "pins" to make them more grippy.
