Just got a new e13 cassette but it needs a shim to fit the XD driver on my hope hub (apparently hope XD is not 100% to XD spec). The proper shims are out of stock everywhere and are made of steel. They come in .05, .1 and .2mm any downside to just using a bit of coke can???

Sounds more like an E13 issue than a hope one to me as I've had multiple sram cassettes in my hope XD hub no bother. What and where are you going to shim?

The casette threads on, I can't think how a flat or tubular shim would work... Isn't it more of a "spacer" that's required (circular?).

Nope. The e13 is a two piece cassette. the inner rings clamp to the hub and need a shim as hope hub is a little narrower than sram.

Its an E13 issue, Hope made their XD freehub so it is compatible with standard XD cassette contact points.

E13 decided to clamp their XD cassette onto the middle of the freehub (Hope XD freehub is slightly stepped in, which does not matter with a standard XD cassette as there is nothing there)

Just another E13 solution to a problem that does not exist

Anyway yes you can make your own shim stock to wrap round the freehub

Yup, basically the E13 fits to the hub in a novel way, which requires the hub be fully XD spec, which Hope's hub isn't. Hope deviated from the standard for some reason, in a way that doesn't obviously affect how SRAM-style cassettes fit but does affect the E13. Basically a good example of why deviating from standards is bad.

(I'm not sure if the E13 method is better or worse... It's definitely more faff, but it's also the reason their cassette is so light, allows for the 2-part "replace the worn bit" design, and avoids the seizey issues some people have had with SRAM. It's very clever but I don't want to ever have to refit one in a car park...)

I might possibly have the right shim, I'll have a wee look.

I'm not blaming anyone for this. eThirteen obviously designed the cassette around Sram rather than Hope but say if you have hope they will give you the shims free.

.......Except they dont have any 🙁

So no issues with an aluminium shim instead of the standard steel one???
