Hi,

So after years of riding a prehistoric bike that even had those 26" wheels its time to upgrade.

Im looking at an Ibis Ripmo AF and trying to decide whether to go for a coil (jade x) or standard (Topaz T3)

it will be a multi use one bike, from fire roads, bit of natural stuff, trail centres and when travel allowed, a trip to the the Alps. on the chunky side of the bell curve at 100 kGs if that makes any difference? and while i enjoy all of these different things in not aiming for big air, probably happy riding reds at trail centres

Bit of a Luddite when it comes to these things and tried to do some research but cant really find anything conclusive.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

cheers

I’ve just bought a Ripmo AF and had the same dilemma. I’m a few kgs heavier and had an email chat with DVO who recommended the air shock as the coil would probably need a retune to get the best from it for someone my weight. That all sounded like a load of time and money I wasn’t really prepared to spend so I went with the air. Hoping it’ll be here next week as I’m chomping at the bit to get out on it.

In terms of performance between coil and air, coil shocks are generally more supple than air but either will be fine for the riding you are going to do on it.

Where are you getting it from and do they actually have stock?

hi, thanks for the input.

Im about to start trying to find somewhere that has the bike, there are some in the UK sunset and Monster who sell them, im not expecting them to have any in stock but they both have discounts on just now. Im not in any great rush for it so happy to wait. Failing that, ive found one in Germany who have them in stock who would be cheaper even with courier, if it weren't for the discounts.

I have no experience of the Ripmo in particular, but from what you say about your usage and your weight I'd also suggest an air shock.

Coil: Pros: very compliant on initial stroke, very deep almost "buttery" feel to a suspension design that had been tuned for a coil shock. Largely fit and forget, no checking pressures, no real servicing demands, will give same suspension control and grip regardless of how hot it gets (up to a point)  Cons: Weight penalty, very linear, can bottom out much more easily if the suspension design isn't well suited for a coil, getting it tuned for you can be a bit of faff as you have to change springs and if you fall between spring strengths you a bit stuck,

Air. Pros Lighter (up to 200-300g less), and perhaps more easily precisely tuned to you, can be made to work with any suspension design with enough faffing to begin with. Easy to live with Cons: might need a bit more looking after, can loose pressure so you'll be forever pumping it up, can get hot and perform less well on long (think Alpine) descents

That's fag packet starters for ten

Sunset had a couple of large red NX builds left in stock when I ordered mine a couple of weeks back. Think they’re both coils though.
