Curious, the Deluxe on my AM9 may get upgraded through the winter and a coil is tempting. Looking for any negatives apart from the weight? Aware that a Fox X2 would be an upgrade (or DVO Topaz etc) but keeping options open!

It's metric sizing (230x65) so second hand options are a bit thinner on the ground. Also aware the Rockshox uses bearing mounts, not sure if any other options do..

Have a Cane Creek Coil IL on my Jeffsy and love it. Wouldn't go back to air, on that bike at least.

Why is it better?

How I feel it is that it's a much better compromise between small bump sensitivity and mid-travel support.  With the (rather meh) air shock that it came with (a Fox DPS Evol) I couldn't get it to feel sensitive and balanced through the full travel, it was either too harsh on the smaller stuff or not supportive enough on the bigger stuff.  It feels much more composed, but not just on the downhills, even climbing where the traction over rocks and roots feels much more supple.

I've been considering a CCIL coil for my spitfire.

Vivid R2C on my Hightower LT. Only tend to put it on for alpine stuff though when the descents are long enough to justify it. For 95% of my riding the standard Fox air shock is good enough

I had initially thought that I'd use the coil in the Alps and perhaps swap back to the air for my regular riding.  I was worried it would move around too much on trail riding.  I took it out a couple of times on some long local trails when I got back from my 3 week alpine mega trip and decided that even for that riding, the CC Coil IL was so much nicer to ride that the air shock is somewhere in my spares box, where I expect it to stay, with possibly an outing when the coil goes back for a service.

Depends what you class as trail riding. For the winch up, plummet down riding I do (FOD, Shropshire, Surrey Hills), then my Enduro 29 coil is brilliant, not bothered by the weight but the performance, which the coil is great for. Supple off the top, loads of grip, when the trail gets rough (eastridge) it just gets on with it.

However, for xc trails, its too heavy and doesn't have that get up and go of a shorter travel trail bike. When I get round to buying a short travel trail bike (Stumpy ST, Fuel EX, etc), it would certainly have a coil shock out back, you can have the ramp up, but still have the suppleness off the top which air will never get near.

Coil is great, depending on the leverage ratio. You get more midstroke for a given sag, but it all depends on how progressive your frame is - I have found in the past that I have had to move up a coil spring after getting better and then found the BB height too high, with bikes that weren't progressive enough - I could bottom out my old 2015 Giant Reign and that was 75lb over sprung for me. Also, the small bump compliance is only noticeable if you have your rebound set towards the quick end - so many people run their coils so dead that all they are doing is packing the shock down on the small bump type impacts, they feel great in the car park but out on the trail it ends up being a placebo unless dialled in right.

I'm currently running a Fox X2 on my Supreme SX though, it's awesome. I wouldn't go with any other coil shock to be honest.

I'm just using the setup that TF recommended to me, and it feels well balanced everywhere.  From memory low speed rebound is quite quick, high speed more damped.  Haven't felt a need to fiddle with it.

I've got a geometron and have swapped the fox x2 air for a ccdb coil. The difference in grip is massive. This is a ccdb thing I think as I've felt the same before when I've fitted to other bikes (mostly dh).

As long as your suspension isn't too linear, then a coil will work well.

I've been running a coil (Push 11-6) on a Fuel EX for the last 12 months, which other than the weight, has no negatives, only positives IMO. It turned a 130mm bike into a bit of a monster.

I've actually put that bike back to a shorter travel, light trail bike again recently, as it had morphed into something a bit silly for what it was intended & i've been running the air shock again, which if you read all the reviews, is meant to be great (Fox DPS Factory Re;Active), but it feels pretty rubbish in terms of performance against the Push shock. I'm tempted once the build is sorted to put one of the lighter coil options on it for better performance (CCDBIL Coil).

My bigger bike (RAAW Madonna 29er) runs a DHX2 coil on it.

What's the Raaw like, Hob Nob? I really liked the look of them, but they're a bit of an unknown brand.

I've got a Geometron with an X2 and it's honestly the best rear suspension I've ever had, on any bike. It came direct from Mojo just before the stich up so it's tuned for the bike, has a few volume spacers, is supremely plush and I can still pop and jump all over the place.

But that doesn't stop me from being coil curious. I haven't ridden any of the new wave coil shocks but the EXT Storia that now comes as an option from Geometron looks like the ultimate option.

Hell of a lot of money to satisfy some curiosity though.

No idea, not ridden it yet! Looks nice though...

It can be awesome, even on a bike with linear suspension sometimes...

You better do a specific post on your RAAW hob nob, looks like one of the most sorted bikes out there on paper - but feedback is thin on the ground obvs.

Thanks for the offer. I did daydream about borrowing one but haven't made the effort to ask anyone yet!

I just had a google RAAW Madonna as I've never heard of it. That's a nice looking bike!

Nothing constructive to add to the subject but I'd never heard of RAAW either, if you wanted a big travel 29er, that looks like a seriously well thought out bit of kit!

I ride a 26" Cotic Rocket, do coil shocks offer a poppy and lively feel or do they soak up everything and make smaller stuff dull?

poppy and lively has little to do with the spring being coil or air

under compression a coil is linear though, whereas air is progressive

Just gone back to an X2 on my Firebird after running a coil for a couple of months. As some have pointed out above its a lot dependent on the frame, the coil was great on my Patrol but I just feel air is much better on a progressive frame like the Firebird. I miss the traction that I used to get but prefer that more 'sit up' feel of the air can, though I may look at the new MRP Hazard and their progressive springs at a later date.

Now have a Push 116 sitting in a box in my spare parts, may hang it on a wall as it looks to good to hide away (from the wife):)

I am running a EXT Storia on a BTR Pinner, the coil shock was an influence over the frame I purchased. The Pinner has a rising rate linkage so works really well with a coil.

I've always preferred coil shocks, probably down to that is what I always used to run on my DH bike.

I've been pretty much a coil convert for years.  While the weight is a factor, the newer light steel springs mean that my CC Inline coil is only 250g heavier than the Rockshox Monarch it replaced.

Current bike is an Airdrop Edit and it seems to suit it well.  Bought it from TFT who do their usual set up based on rider and bike.  Other than a small amout of spring preload, it's been fit and forget.

I have a CC Inline coil on my Devinci Troy. Fantastic upgrade, rear end tracks a lot better and can still hop and manoeuvre the bike easily (my main concern when converting to coil)...the Troy is very progressive which definitely helps. There's a weight penalty obviously but with the lightweight spring it's not horrendous.

Intense Tracer 27.5 now with CCDB IL, other than weight only positives as has already been said, why i've waited since 2004 when i had my last coil shock i really don't know.Won't be going back to air.

Transition Scout with a Fox DHX RC4.

A massive improvement over the turd that was my Monarch. It climbs better with the coil shock as well as feeling better pretty much everywhere else and it looks cool as hell! The only downside is that it’s loads heavier that the Monarch was.

Coils work well on the AM9, its consistently progressive and a fairly efficient pedaler which is ideal.

Ive tried RS Super Deluxe C RCT, DHX2 & CC DB Coil CS. Of all those my favourite was the DHX2, then the Super Deluxe, then the CC. They are all good though so whichever way you go you can't go wrong I think.

The one I would like to try is the new EXT & the new MRP Raze...

Been waiting for ages for the bits to land so I could have a DHX made for my Sentinel.

It’s my first coil shock but it won’t be my last.

CCDB IL coil on my Smuggler. Improves the bike increasing the rear end grip, great on all trails both up & down

Got a Push Eleven-six fitted on my turner RFX. Holy mother of god that thing turned a bike that was pretty amazing anyway into an absolute beast. The only word to describe what it gives you is traction. Endless traction. I have a set of Ribbon Coils up front as well so the bike is a portly 33lbs but riding it you would not guess. It just climbs and tracks so well. Point it down and it's a magic carpet ride through the chunder.

How is the ccdb IL without using the climb switch, say pedalling up a fire road? Would it Bob a bit more than air shock with similar tune?

In all fairness Scruff I didn’t really notice much bob when pedalling on fire road

i ran a long a bumpy fire road on a slight descent and it was so smooth, but on the proper rocky downs it was awesome

buttery smooth

I’m still hoping CC will make a 230x60 Coil [IL], as the other options in this size are notably spendier and heavier

Interesting post this, I've just recently been thinking about whether a coil would work on my Orange Stage 4.

The CC Inline coil looks to be really interesting and is available in the right (dinky little) size.

I used to have an old Heckler with a 5th Element coil on, and that was excellent.

I guess its just down to experimentation whether or not it works well...!

I use it alot without the climb switch and only recently started using the climb switch at all a couple of months ago when I finally got round to fitting the remote.  It's fine on my Jeffsy, if I didn't have the remote now I probably still wouldn't use it at all even now I've tried it a few times.

I would like to try onr but it wont be on my current bike as the frame is way to linear for it to work
