I'm looking to replace an RP23 with a coil shock. I'd like to spend c.£300 max, any suggestions.
Regards
Richard

Custom tuned Fox Van R should work very well and simple to set up so fit and forget.

Ebay is a good start for s/hand items.

Dueller shock is a 'cheap' Cane Creek DB and comes with a Ti spring if you want / like to play with set ups for different terrain. Just over £300 though and unlikely to show up s/hand regularly.

Polymer / self lubing DU bushes are worth installing to.

I got my Custom Van R off TFT, it's very nice! Replaced an RP23 Kashima, I was too fat for an air shock!

Shouldn't you be at sea 😉 ?

What bike and what intended use? Single pivot I'd be tempted to go for a dueller or ccdb, but a cheap second hand fox van pushed for your weight and style would be as good option too.

Do you know what size you need? I've got a DHX5.0 with two springs (fat bloke and normal bloke weights) that's been sitting in my shed waiting for a new bike (which ain't gonna happen anytime soon). Its 200x57.

I put it on my Blur LT for a trip to the Alps and it was ace. It made the bike too heavy for XC use though.

I asked the same question a few days ago. See http://singletrackmag.com/forum/topic/coil-shocks-whats-a-good-new-or-shand-buy

New - Van RC £259
DSP Dueller £300

s/hand: Van RC again, DHX5, or maybe a dhx rc4

I'd recommend a Van RC. I noticed a big difference in going from a RP23 to a stock Van RC. Subsequently went to CCDB and didn't that much improvement between the Van and the CCDB.

If I'm happy with an RP2 would a coil shock make a big enough difference to make it worth getting one for general trail duties?

It's for an 2011 Orange Blood so 190 x 50mm is required, it is fitted with a 160mm Marzocchi 55 Coil RC3Ti.

My current bike is a hardtail so leaves me with very little knowledge about what's available and no experience of how to set up a shock properly so I'd like something which is "user" friendly and reliable. But I would like to learn more as I go along.

I'm about 85kg's so suggestions of spring rate would also help me?

Thanks

Richard

I guess it massively depends where/how you ride. I bought a second hand DHX5 for my Pitch before a trip to the Pyrenees to do some uplift/bikepark stuff. I like it so much I decided to stick with it for my normal riding (Lake District rocky stuff + Scottish/Welsh trail centres mostly).

Most people would tell you it makes the bike too heavy for XC but I weight plenty anyway and I'm quite strong. Feels so much better than the RP2 it replaced. I was always happy to winch up hills fairly slowly anyway and the coil doesn't stop me doing that - but it makes rocky descents sooo much fun.

North Lakes,Trough of Bowland and Gisburn my main areas of riding.
I want a fit and forget set up really so that I can concentrate on riding the thing. My weight means that I will not notice the odd pound or two extra of the coil and shock combo.
