Hey,

Off to CyB this weekend and looking for recommendations of a few strava segments to compile into a matesrace. None of us have been before so not sure which to use. Also never used matesrace before either.

I'm not entirely sure which trails we'll be doing, hopefully all the red/black ones.

A mix of segments would be nice, some good downs and maybe one or two ups (just so the whippets can feel good).

Cheers

Do you not just batter down trails and see who gets to the bottom first?

Crashes aside that'll be the one who starts first usually

remember rule one
Don't Be A Dick 🙂

Pick 3 trails at random from a hat before you go, ride it all then compare later.

This really. None of us are skilled enough to make a safe overtake!

send the slowest down first then you'll all have the same time.

Amazingly, all the marked routes have strava segments, some going downhill and some going up.
Why not follow one?

iolo, because he wants to use http://www.matesrace.co.uk/ to group a few segments before they go and aren't familiar with CyB.

I can't help I'm afraid. Only ridden it once with Strava and found that most stopping points interrupted segments. Tricky one.

Correct. Was that not clear?

We will be riding the marked routes, just wanted to pick a few segments to add another competitive edge to the trip. No doubt we won't actually know when were on one of the selected segments and will only compare results at the end of the weekend.

So why not compare each others strava over a pint?

Comparing segments in strava is a complete PITA.

Hence why some nice fellow made http://www.matesrace.co.uk/

Why is everyone being an arse?

The Adams Family is a brilliant one to have a go at beasting yourself on top to bottom. Just had a look for you and it's called 'Adams Family full'. False Teeth is another good one, along with Beginning Of The End and Abel. Then there's one called 'Nasty bwich climb' for your climb. Job done.

Ok, 10 mates in the pub.
Chose 3 segments.
"What was your time on False Teeth?" Everyone reads out their time. "Dave you win".
"What was your time on Dreamtime?" Everyone reads out their time. "Steve, you win".
And so on.
Is it really a ballache? And it has the added bonus of not having to know the names before you turn up and nobody knows who the winner is until it's time for a pint at the end.

Thank you.

I didn't want to be rude, but yes some people do seem to be overly arsy.

Everyone reads out their time.

Good idea. Then as each time is read out, they go and stand by the fireplace. Faster times on the left, slower on the right, Top Gear style. Then add your time on to the last for the next segment and reorder yourselves again. Should be pretty simple and quick to work out a 10 person leaderboard for 3 different segments. 😉 Slowest buys a round.

Or a bit easier, click on a segment in the app and click 'Following' to see where you appear against your mates, in order. A bit like the above.

That site is genius.

Oh, and the Adams Family segment is about 3 or 4 sections straight through, so tell everybody not to stop until they get to a fireroad out in the open. You can have a look on Strava yourself to see what I mean.

2nd the adams family, terrain is varied and its bloody exhausting racing to the bottom at full pelt.

I'm that nice fellow 😉

It is possible for you to create an event in Matesrace after the ride if you want to choose segments in hindsight. Make sure the riders are members of the Strava cub first, and then create the event for that day once people have uploaded their times to Strava. It would get updated with their results within 30 minutes.

To be honest, I find it works better when a Matesrace event can be run over a longer time period, such as a month, as then you don't have the issues of riding order etc affecting the results as much and people can set a time when the fancy.

Have fun whatever you decide!

I've not done it in anger yet, but the matesrace thing is really good (not that you have to use it - calling out times in the pub is perfectly acceptable too!)

If you are organising, them maybe look at the profiles on Strava and choose the ones that suit your style of riding? 🙂

I am planning to do a matesrace later in the year as a one evening event for a group I cycle with and a neighbouring group with beer being bought by the losers for the winners - should be great fun!

Yes I know about inaccuracies of strava etc
