Hello we’re considering the coast to coast mtb. Has any one completed it and if so what accommodation/bunk houses did you use please. Also the logistics of moving spares, clothing from one place to the next.
We’re looking at st bees to robin hoods bay. Unless there’s a better option ?
Any info and help please ..?

Thanks

Pack light. Pack well. You don't need kit transporting.

Cornish Tramway, Portreath to Devoran is the shortest - there an back in about 90minutes! 😉

You could do the Sustrans route but incorporate all the off road sections which I've done a few times. I've only done it once without some form of support vehicle and as someone said, pack light, very light......! The key is accommodation on the second night if you do it over 3 days, and the Rookhope Inn (in Rookhope) is the perfect spot.

The off road trail out of Rookhope is about as good as it gets.

Damn dovebiker beat me to it!  Did that a few weeks ago: my first time so occasional map reading and navigating some flooding meant it took me 70 minutes each way.  Nice route though!

I've done Ravenglass to Ravenscar a few times. Day 1 was tough though the lakes. It was hard  through the dales. Boring in the middle and great towards the end.

You pass loads of yha. Join the site to get discount and a map.

If you want to do it supported & for charity you could try this;

https://regonline.activeeurope.com/builder/site/default.aspx?EventID=2151345

I did the off road west to east a few years ago and they managed to drag me across even though I was no where near fit enough (I underestimated the challenge!)

They've added east to west by road prior to the return west to east off road this year for the really ambitious!

Did the Tim Woodcock route a couple of years ago with some (none bikey) mates.

We did 5 days and stayed in Eskdale YH, an ace hostel in Shap, Black Bull in Reeth and a funny millipede infested B&B near Chop Gate. Day 2 was a bit of a killer, with us finding ourelves knee deep in an endless bog at about 10pm.

I carried everything with me in a rucksack, but probably could have cut it down a little. Took one set of riding clothes, one set of chillin clothes, basic spares (pads, chain, shit tons of zip ties etc), too many jackets, first aid kit, basic toiletries etc. There's plenty of shops along the route, so don't worry too much.

If I were to do it again I'd do it with some mates who are actually used to riding a long way off road, get a GPS with mapping on it (referring to the map every mile is tedious) and I'd book the accomodation more than a couple of days in advance.

It's an ace ride, don't rush it, the scenery is spectacular.

Yep, done it twice, Mediterranean to Atlantic in a week, once across the Pyrenees then last year further South, it's a great adventure.

....oh, and logistically we ditched the car in Robin Hood's Bay And got the train over to St. Bees. I would not recommend this.

If you spend the night in Rookhope and there's quite a few of you, some can stay at the pub and some at the Bunkhouse, some 20 yards away.

I did Whitehaven to Sunderland a lot of years ago. As much off road as possible but its a lot of country lanes too.  You can carry enough gear for that if you stay in B&B's. If you are reasonably fit you can do it in 2 days.

I did a mixture of Tim Woodcock's route with all the wet weather options in and a bit of my own thing where I felt like it. We stayed in YHA's and a private bunkhouse too.

A good trip, but five days would have made it a bit more enjoyable than four, we were always under pressure to keep moving.

I did the pedalnorth route (Ravenglass to Ravenscar) a couple of years ago for my 60th.  Me and my mate had wanted to do it for years but the logistics were always too complicated (we wanted a series of fun day rides rather than a bikepacking slog) until my wife offered to support us. She (and a pal) would drive from campsite to campsite, set up, cook and also pack up next day, leaving us free to focus on riding. We took our time and did it over 7 days. We found the day's long, 10 to 12 hours, but a lot of that was map reading, we could have knocked about 4 hours off each day with a gps. We originally intended to do the Tim Woodcock route but were advised that the option we took was a better route. Look on pedalnorth.com for details

yes, puerto andratx to puerto pollensa offroad across the tramuntana mountains, did it over 3 days, was very good.

We hired a guide, who took all our kit from hotel to hotel.

Definitely worthwhile

Ardnamurchan Point to Broughty Ferry Castle; 7 days, lots of B&Bs, one ferry and a half day at Nevis Range on the DH, just for fun.

We took a fairly zig zag route, north coast of Ardnamurchan peninsula, Loch Shiel, GlenFinnan, Camusnagaul Ferry to Ft Bill.  Nevis, Great Glen Way, Corrieyairick Pass, quick hurl around Laggan Wolftrax, Glen Tromie, Feshie, Linn of Dee, Invercauld, Loch Muick, Capel Mounth, Minister's Path to Prosen and on to Isla; Backwater & Lintrathen then over the Sidlaws to Dundee.  Superb.

Following a garmin will save you so much time. When mine packed in at Hawes due to constant rain it became a ball ache stopping and starting and checking the map and back tracking.

If you want to let someone else sort the B&B and load lugging for you we used these people when we did it a few years back - great service and good B&Bs...

...and they'll tailor a service to you.

We did the Tim Woodcock route.

This pic even made the front page banner of STW!...

I did it with a couple of mates in 2002. St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay. Another friend conveniently got injured the week before so took care of luggage transport. Stopovers were in Eskdale, Ambleside, Kirkby Stephen (all YHA), plus Osmotherley (Three Tuns as a treat) - good pubs there.

It was hard work but a really good laugh despite my poor prep back in the day - write up with tips on what not to do here:

We parked in York then train to St Bees via Carlisle then Scarborough to York when we had finished did the Woodcock by far the best compared to the rest.
