I want to do the off road coast to coast.

There seems to be versions of this for road bikes.

Can someone send me the link for the true off road coast to coast ride and also inform me of any charities that do this or cheap tour companies that do guides.

Cheers K

Did an offroad scottish c to c a few years back. Skye to Montrose. Two of us, took a lot of planning and we were very lucky to complete it. Fantastic tho' and was a definite highlight in my life.

If you're tempted, get in touch and I'll try and dig out the details.

I'm planning on doing Tim Woodcock's coast to coast this year. Seems to be quite highly regarded as a good off-road route.

The Woodcock route is the one that's generally regarded as the 'official' offroad route. It goes as close as you (legally) can to the Wainwright walking route. Just buy the book, buy the OS maps, mark them up and do it,

that woodcock book linked to above is good but the maps aren't the best in it - would be definately worthwhile getting the OS maps as well as mentioned. the original book if you can get it has better maps - worth trying to find one if you can

I did the Tim Woodcock C2C two years ago, cracking route and an amazing experience. I remember he was on about updating the route though not sure if it has happened yet or not, seem to remember a large high boggy moor crossing near Shap that many people, (including myself) skip and road it to Kirkby stephen (we did it because it was march and was in torrential rain = not enough daylight to complete a ~25mile cross in a bog)

There are some good youtube vids of people doing this route to get motivated as well 😀

I did the Tim Woodcock route with a couple of friends between Easter and May Day - a good challenge as we went unsupported and used OS map extracts. We stayed in YHA accommodation almost every night and rode to Whitby to stay there afterwards and catch the train home.

The bog on the way over to Shap was 'nice'! The route does take in some great descents though.

WRT the book - it is very basic and we hardly used it as the 'maps' are akin to a 13-year old's first attempt at WordArt in c.1995.

Useful tips cheers. This boggy stretch, is it the bit to the south west of Shap?

How many days do you need to budget to do the Woodcock route for mere mortals? Is four days at 50ish miles a day pushing it given the terrain?

Derek Purdy did an off road C2C pre-sustrans which goes from Whitehaven to Sunderland via Sty head and High cup Nick. It is pretty much the same as the Sustrans route from Stanhope though.

Its a bit shorter than the Tim Woodcock route so might be good if you are pushed for time.

The Woodcock Scottish C2C is excellent. You can do it unsupported staying in hostels of you don't take too much kit.

is the Scottish C2C route posted anywhere? I've looked around & there seem to be a number of different versions. Didn't know Woodcock had done one as well.

That Dave Buchanan chap just done the Welsh C2C2C without stopping. 50+ hours riding- pretty bloody mental I reckon. He just finished last night, when he wakes up he may be a good source for route info.

We did the Woodcock St Bees to RH Bay in 3.5 days. We certainly are mortal! I would say that or 4 days is a nice pace

Yep that was a great effort by Dave. Amazingly, he isn't sleeping as he's been active on Twitter this afternoon!

The St Bees to RH Bay route sounds rather unpleasant if this account is anything to go by... http://www.bikemagic.com/ride-features/rich-rothwells-coast-to-coast-ride/7048.html

I do like the idea of the Highlands C2C, but not sure on details of the route.
