How many forum users r from the Co, Durham area. Where do you ride.
*waves*
I'm in Darlington. Ride at Hamsterley or in Swaledale, when I get the chance.
Hello, Catterick so not really Co.Durham but not far, mainly Swaledale and the lakes
I'm from spennymoor ride mainly the old lines. Auckland walk, deerness valley. Just got back into riding.
Work in Durham, there is some stuff for post work rides nearby, natural trails - edmundbyers and Hexham common are good. Hamsterly and Chopwell are fun for man made stuff. Swaledale for further afield.
Where are you based?
Spennymoor . Shackleton.
Above Barnard Castle, local riding is Baldersdale, Lunedale, Hamsterley and various tracks inTeesale
A bit far south for my knowlege. If you look at the os map there are some trails between spennymoor and durham. Send me an email and I'll try and find the trail map I have on my work machine. There are lots of trails running off from the railway line paths and some stuff in the woods around esh winning.
What kind of riding are you after and do you have a car?
Spennymoore. AKA 'Spennymanure'!
Only kidding, (I'm from Sherburn Village, originally) 😉
To get offroad proper your'e gonna have to go to Hamsterley, Swaledale, North Pennines, North York Moors etc but there are some decent local trails to go at as well, although nothing particularly challenging.
Grab a 25.000 map & go explore!
Live in the South of the county. Loads of local bridleways in pretty much any direction from home. The local trails are good for fitness and just enjoying the countryside. Just got back from a local evening ride now - beautiful weather, loads of curlews, kestrels, cuckoos etc.
We also go to Hamsterley, Edmundbyers/Blanchland, Wolsingham, Yorks Dales, NY Moors.
There is loads of great riding within 1 hour of home.
Durham City here. Broom park for training rides up to the coast to coast and Waskerly. Tend to ride through and around Hamsterly on the moors (doctor's gate) rather than on the planned routes. From Waskerly you can get to Blanchland and Slayley and then head east up around Hexhamshire Common. South of Durham you've got Guisborough and Rosedale and then you're into the North York moors for some most excellent moorland singletrack. County Durham has the highest proportion of disused railway track (cycleway) in the country so it's great for winter training when the normal trails etc are trashed or for a pootle with the kids.
Live in the north of the county, near the Northumberland border. As mentioned, Edmunbyers, Chopwell (on our doorstep!) Hamsterley, Blanchland. Then off to Lakes, Scotland, Northumberland or Yorkshire. All good
Shackleton. Spennymoor is situated between bishop Auckland and Durham. I ride a hardtail so most of my riding is nothing too rough.
I'm from Sunderland, can I play?
Darlington here too. You could try the North Yorks Moors now that it is drying out. Lots of options if you do not like it rough, and lots of options if you do! 😉
Live in Darlington, Ride mainly, Hamsterley, Gisborough, Catterick, Dalby, Dales, Whinnlatter, Grizedale, and about to try Gisburn!! Always looking for rides! When I can get out!
I'm near Houghton le Spring and as above, there's a great network of old railway tracks and slightly cheeky paths too. The Weardale Way is a grand scenic route on a quiet weekday and you can come back in on the c2c.
So many great natural trails in my corner of North west Durham, and a decent network of old railway lines to access them. Something for everyone 🙂
From Spennymoor you can ride round the back of the waterworks to Tudhoe then down to Sunderland Bridge where you can join the bridleway from Shincliffe to Meadowfield, then you can access all the railway paths back to Bishop Auckland or go up to Esh and Tow Law or go along to Lanchester then up to Waskerly. You have some great riding on your doorstep.
Darlington also here just getting into riding (currently do work and back :)) but done hamsterly a few times before when I was younger. Is there any decent rides round Darlington my fellow Quakers?
The closest decent rides to you probably start around Stokesley. There is a Darlington ride in the Durham Derek Purdy book but I think that is mainly farm tracks and back roads or as he calls them 3 ply with a bit of bridleway thrown in.
I'm moving to Durham sometime between now and October, will be after some input into some local trails at some point. Some evening blasts for my single speed would be perfect!
loads...don't tell any one tho.....Blanchland area is great....
some great woodland stuff around beamish too..
ykDales NyMoors Northumberland weardale and more all a short drive for proper MTB... hamsterley is pants ride through it and get out on to the surrounding moors..

Wow, lots of Quakers here.
There's nothing too amazing round Darlington itself, though there's the odd bit of bridleway farmtrack that's okay for a blast away from the roads. There's some cheeky singletrack parallel to the footpath by Baydale Beck.
Chester-le-Street here. Waldridge Fell is good although the council don't like people on bikes there. Cong Burn, Beamish Woods and Ousbrough Woods all good fun. Then for easy stuff the old railway paths are good.
Thanks Mike I've done the usual up to Middleton st George on the old railway and a few other bits I've found but wanting some more mid week off road action. Looks like I'll have to travel for it.
There's some field-edge and farm track stuff up toward Barmpton, some farm tracks parallel to the motorway to the west of town and a few odds and ends like the singletrack through the waterworks and in Red Hall woods or Beech Woods.
There's enough for an hour or so of a quick blast.
Do you use Strava? I've mapped a few local rides on there: http://app.strava.com/rides/8039656
There's loads of great riding round Spenny and Durham 50 plus miles on bridleways, backroads and cheeky singletrack is no problem, no problem really with poaching trails at any points some really quite cheeky stuff in central Durhan round the University and river banks although it's better to wait until it's quieter for that.
Spenny woods when they're dry are ace pretty much all offroad to Durham vis Sunderland bridge some of it very very cheeky if you want ace trails!
We are both from 5 mins outside Durham city, my fiance is well into mountain biking - Hamsterley/Chopwell/7 Stanes....I like riding but not as good as him.
Always interested in meeting other locals though...we have a Specialized pitch, stumpjumper and big hit.....hehe
Broompark here.
Mostly use the railway paths with occasional forays of into the woods that adjoin the tracks.
Think I can still follow the Spennymoor to Durham via Sunderland bridge route as described by the Raouligan, but without the pre ride bacon sarnies there would definitely be something lacking.
There is loads of singletrack to find. Keep looking!
Newcastle based here, but often head south to Co Durham. Was at Chopwell yesterday and it was almost bone dry for once!
Always on the lookout for new routes, and happy to show people around the few bits that I'm familiar with (although can't promise any degree of skill on the bike!).
