My LBS, after looking at truing my Mavic Aksium Disk Rear wheel, have politely said I'm pushing the weight limit and that the long term solution is to hand build a stronger wheel, costing in region of £200-300

I'm 107-ish Kg, and can't justify the above cost  - so was looking at this as a replacement for the Aksium

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/wheelswheels-rear/700c-622-rear-wheel-32h-dt-swiss-r460-db-disc-rim-with-shimano-fhrs505-disc-hub-in-black/

I don't care about wheel weight, and I can get past the fact that I'll have a rear wheel with silver spokes and a front wheel with black spokes

Any opinions, recommendations welcome (and I'm working on trying to get below the 100Kg mark, before that's suggested)

thanks

spa cycles in Harrogate with build you some stonking lightweight wheels.  I am 125kg and never broke a spoke in a spa built wheel.

Just get some mavic open pro 36h rims on the hubs of your choice. not all manufactures do 36 hole hubs, but shimano and hope do.

OP how much have they needed truing? There may be plenty of life left.

Otherwise any decent 36H rim/build should work fine.

I'm same weight and used Stans A400 rims on Hope hubs, they were ace for over 20,000 miles of commuting and are still going strong.

The spokes had lost tension, pinging and creaking as I rode.  Some of the spokes have had to be cut and replaced because they were not shifting so couldn't be adjusted.

The wheel is a warranty replacement from Mavic after the original wheel that came with the bike died a year ago (one of the flanges on the hub snapped), so I don't really have much hope for its longevity

+1 for Spa Cycles wheels. I've had 3 sets now.  They've always been expertly built and never gone out of true despite me being a similar weight to the OP.   They are good value too.

32h is plenty on an open pro rim.

thats what i use on my cx/tourer bike.

i weigh 130kg, never had to true them after initial build.

When i go camping, I can’t lift the bike.

I weigh 100kg (so near your weight) and have a set of Superstar Pave wheels on my road bike, I’ve had them a couple of years and a fair few miles without issue.

I’ve even done a lap of Swinley Blue on 25c tyres, they’ve never needed touching with a spoke key.

No idea what they weigh and don’t really care given my weight and how cheap they were.

32H Open pro touring? You must be easy on your wheels.

Funnily enough a light road rim is not indestructible, despite your experience.

23k km on my open pros laced to alfine/xt hub on my commuter before they died and needed to be relaced.

Still going strong with another owner.

I'm a bit over 100kg, was running wtb i19 on PX selcof hubs, only died as the Freehub has gone, still true after 6k km of roadie stuff.

Now on hope five20, ok so far but only done 280km

Mavic Open Pro on whatever road hubs Hope do these days (mine are Mono RS)

I went to them after ripping two spokes clean through the rim of an Aksium wheel under hard acceleration (and I'm fat).

Bombproof and lighter than the Aksiums they replaced.
