Can anyone tell me what they do and how they differ to a normal mech?

Running single ring with no Chain device, my findings are as follows.

Magic.

In the rollerbearing bit of my type2 is a pixie, this pixie's sole purpose is countering chain slap. The Pixie is powered by gnar, so the more gnar I am the better he works. If he is not given enough gnar to keep him alive the pixie will die. You can tell when your pixie is dead because the chain starts to fall off.

It's unfortunate that the Hamsters don't see the wisdom of a sticky FAQs forum to avoid the clutter, as 9/10 of posters have a blind spot about the search tool. Hey ho.
