Probably missing something simple here so be kind!

XT 11-36 cassette, SLX long cage clutch mech, XT shifter.

All set up in the LBS as I am hopeless with gears 😳

In the top two cogs (largest) there is a fair amount of resistance & noise when the bike is in the stand and its difficult to shift into "top".

Turning the clutch mechanism off helps but somethings not right.

Thoughts?

Try pushing the mech forward with your hands, if you can move it with a good bit of resistance its not the clutch.

Though I suspect it isn't as you say turning it off doesn't really help.

Indexing may not be quite right.

Chain too short?

The shop haven't done their job properly is the first thing that comes to mind.

In terms of the gears it sounds like it's either the chains too short or the b-screw and upper limit screw needs adjusting.

Chain length is fine, adjusted so I can run either a 34 or 36t chainring. Only noticed the "issue" stepping it down from 36 to 34.

I'll run it by the shop for a quick check up but thought I'd ask in case it was something silly I was/am missing.

Ive always noticed that with the clutch engaged there is a fair bit of resistance in the stand. Once riding i never noticed it.

Sounds like a b screw issue to me.
Screw it in a bit more and try it.

+1

when the bike is in the stand and its difficult to shift into "top".

And/or low limit screw needs adjusting. Are you running 1X ?

I have seen a similar issue. Is the chain routed correctly through the rear mech so it doesn't foul on the little tab?

Your not running a single ring on a Shimano double chainset are you by any chance?

I had a similar issue with my SLX 2x10 driverchain. The chainline was pretty bad from big ring to the top of cassette. Changing the BB spacing helped quite a bit, and also in general I avoid using the big chaining with the big sprockets.

This is what I thought as I haver the same issues, got it something like by adjusting b-screw but it's far from perfect.

Having a slightly longer chain and perfect chain line helped a bit with this on my set up, but what completely eliminated it was the one up mech cage.

I found that a full length outer gear cable solved all my similar issues. Was getting ghost shifting and all sorts of stuff on a hardtail with flex stays...that with my weight was making them flex a lot.
