Hi,
I’ve searched the forum and done research in various other places but I’m still clueless!
The last time I bought a mountain bike I don’t think there was all these various types. And now I can’t figure out the right type of bike I should go for with where I want to go.
I live in a fairly mountains part of Scotland with a lot of first forestry tracks (the type you could take a 4x4 vehicle on but probs my not a normal car). I want to buy a bike that would be good for long rides on these types of trails and also maybe in some narrower tracks.
Would something like a Vitus Nucleous be good for this? I’m presuming I don’t need a lot of fork suspension for these kind of trails? But I could be wrong. The Vitus Sentier looks really well sieved but would that be a waste of money considering I’m not planning doing any really bumpy rides?
Also, would 29 inch wheels be better do you think? I’m 180cm tall and 100kg. I’d like to use the bike in all weathers.
Anyways, I’m clueless on what type of bike to go for. I’d like something decent that will last me but don’t want to spend on specs I don’t need.
Thanks for any tips or advice. It really is appreciated as I can’t get to a bike shop just now.
Thanks
Yes it will be perfectly fine. If you get keen or break something then you know you need something burlier. That was my budget when I started then I bought a Specialized Epic after 2 or 3 years and upgraded components over time. 20 years ago. Just do it. Don't wring your hands about it.
Delivery at the moment could take some time - maybe search second hand in your area. Distributers are out of stock or extremely busy. I wouldn't buy a new bike now without expecting delivery for a few months.
I'd largely echo what cbike says. It'll get you started and probably handle anything you can throw at it for a while yet. Wheel size is a whole of another debate but both are popular and both work so don't worry too much. Also check out the Rockrider range at Decathlon. Usually good value bikes.
Just had a look at the Nucleus - looks great for what you want. Also you’re no more clueless than the rest of us, we just know the lingo 😉. Get out, ride and enjoy!!
Thanks guys, that’s really helpful. Yes, I think it’s easy to over think things sometimes!
Welcome - and where in Scotland are you?
Thanks. I’m on Skye
A 29er Hardtail sounds a good option for you although you would also be fine on 27.5”. Does the Nucleus come in 29er - I cant remember?
If not the Sentier 29er is a decent option as is a Voodoo Bizango (Halfords).
Hi,
Yes, the Nucleus comes as a 29 aswell. I'll what I'm able to get my hands on soonest
