Not bothering with Police, just not going to use the road anymore.

Yes, and the sort of thing I get on pretty much every ride at least once.
Either people don't care or they don't realise how close they are when passing.

You’ve got a video, report it. You can do it online and it will only take minutes.

Every time I’ve reported stuff the lack of video evidence means it’s never progressed by the polices. That driver will do that same close pass again and again. Reporting it may only result in a call off the police but it’s something.

This is why I cycle about 1/3 of the way into the lane. Nobody goes round me unless it’s clear the other way to use that side of the road. That looked horribly dangerous.

Leaving aside the date issue, yes it's too close. It's not 1.5m, which is the recommended minimum distance at 30mph.

If there's footage, why not report it? It's easier than ever. Might not be enough for the Police to take action, but might also be the extra evidence they need to get a repeat offender.

And if we never report these things when we do have evidence, then the problem will never go away.

Report it, my local constabulary are very good at dealing with cam footage (car or bike). Avon and Somerset police by the way.

Every time I have felt there is something serious to report they have responded with a positive response and said they will be issuing fixed penalty or pursuing a prosecution

That's great to hear, given the usual feedback I see on hear.

Yep.

This is why I cycle about 1/3 of the way into the lane

This is why I gave up cycling on most main roads.

I'm with Kerley. I do a lot of road km's and passes like that are fairly common, the sad fact is they barely register with me anymore.

If you have the footage and think the pass was too close report it, if nothing happens then all you've lost is five minutes.

Not defending car driver but you hogging the kerb/side of road you are almost inviting car drivers to pass you. Move out a tad.

Approx 2 secs into footage the cyclist looks back and then seems to make an evasive manoeuvre a second or so before the car arrives.

I marked a red line to show where the cyclist would still have been if they hadn’t made that move just before the car overtook them*

*Fortunate that the cyclist:

1. Looked back at that moment and evaded (?)
2. Hadn’t instead veered a few inches to the right 😳

Trying to squeak by between the cyclist and oncoming traffic (rather than waiting for the oncoming traffic to clear); it's pretty common frankly and can be pretty scary.

This is one of mine (I think that I and the coach driver had to react to avoid trouble).

Did the van driver forget he was towing another car! Unbelievable (well sadly not really). It so often feels like people will either follow the car ahead or go for any gap regardless of the situation

The lack of wobble and/or swearing from the rider in the second clip is very impressive. Nerves of steel!

To me that just looks like any regular pass. It's become such the norm that stuff like that just wouldn't register with me any more, which is sad.

That was my initial reaction at first. Then I watched it a few more times and I realised it definitely broke the close pass guidelines, and also how low my own expectations have got.

First one is definitely too close, second one is horrible. I avoid the main roads around here like the plague.

By not reporting and not getting action taken (I know that's out of our hands in the main) then it becomes normalised. It only takes a few times without being 'caught' and the car driver thinks that it must be OK, whether they thought it wasn't in the first instance or not.

The OP video is pretty normal, but way too close all the same.

The second one would make me jump out of my skin. So scary!!

Yep, a regular occurrence here in Shetland, though apparently the police are finally going to do a close pass event/promotion here this summer. I'll be getting popcorn in for the social media comments.

Had a good done yesterday. Me and my friend 2up on a two lane road, nothing coming towards us at all, the car still managed to pass us without hardly going into the other lane. I did swear a bit.

Another friend has got a camera on board now as he seems to attract CPs and the last time he got in touch with our local police they allegedly said if he valued his life he should get a camera as without it they can do nothing. He did, he's submitted some stuff recently, AFAIK still nothing's happened...

Highland just did an operation close pass and put it on their facebook, inevitably half the responses are anti-cyclist rants and people proudly telling the police that they're dangerous drivers.

Its only a close pass when you can kick the side of the car, and I dont think you could in that instance?

Would I overtake like that, certainly not but a lot of people do.

Where were your lights?

Very poor use of hand gestures, and the language was almost pitiful.

@funkydunc

Just getting old and intolerant, but not enough energy to get enraged 🙁

But it was a bit hairy.

As suggested, I must start getting out into my lane a bit more. The A403 has become like the A4... this is supposed to be a cycle diversion route while they building a seawall at Aust.

Hopefully when this joke is connected... the A403 will be come more relaxed.

Note: the Stravao route the roundabout, is was like it when I got there ;-_)

The cyclist swerved at the last moment. Look again at the red line in the second pic on my collage and imagine the cyclist’s hip still being on that line. It wasn’t the car that swerved away.

I think there's something about the speed of the car that modifies that?

E.g. a driver doing a slow speed manoeuvre 1-2mph in a car park could probably park within 15cm safely.
At 30mph, kicking distance is about right.
In the OP's example at 50mph then much more distance is required.

I didn’t realise that the gap is speed reliant thought 1.5 metres was mandatory come what may?

Isn't it 1.5m at 30 mph and wider after that?

Though I'm liking the kicking option

Either people don’t care or they don’t realise how close they are when passing.

Interesting contrast here - on an open road with no oncoming traffic.

on an open road with no oncoming traffic.

I don't think there is anything more infuriating. I've had similar to that on a dual carriageway with nothing in the outside lane.

My recent favourite was the little old lady in her Nissan Note who waited very patiently until the other side of the road was completely free and them gave me about 50cm of room as she passed. :0
