Do we think it's been long enough since toeclips that we can actually call them clip pedals,or at least clip in ?
It just seems silly in 2025.
Minor rant over.

No.  Clips still exist.

If you want to go down that road, flat pedals should be renamed as they aren't flat

I’m too pedantic to call them ‘clipless’ (because they obviously aren’t) but also too aware of tradition to call them clips.

So I call them ‘clippy’ pedals, and you can too, if you like.

call them clips if you want, but dont get rid of clipless. both names can exist

in fact, werent original toe clips more of a strap than a clip to begin with? why arent they just called strapless?

my hill to die on is suspension adjustment nomenclature. "add rebound" should NOT mean turn the rebound knob to plus, thats more rebound damping which means you have less rebound. Also "open" and "closed" - does that require knowledge of that particular products valving? or does it rely on the convention that ACW is closing and CW is opening?

Though the clips were needed to attach the straps to.

Clips, clipless, SPDs, spuds, clippy pedals... anything works for me because we all understand what it means.

And what would we rename flats anyway? Spiky shin gougers? Slightly concave pedals with pins around the edge?

Right there with you brother.

I always assume "open" means faster and "closed" means slower, but I prefer to just say rebound is fast or slow and compression is more or less (damping).

"Flats" are only clipless if you put Powergrips on them.

why arent they just called strapless?

monster power track riders use a strap to compliment the mechanism. If you want to upset people with thighs that big then go right ahead

They were clips and straps. Strapless pedals sounds a bit kinky.

I am going to have to respectfully disagree with this. What you are adjusting is the damping, so the “damping” part is implied.

Also "open" and "closed" - does that require knowledge of that particular products valving? or does it rely on the convention that ACW is closing and CW is opening?

Is it not the other way around? You increase damping by screwing in the adjusters. They are like taps, clockwise reduces the flow, ACW increases it. More flow = less damping.

anyway, to answer the question, clipless pedals should not be called clipper pedals.

Flats and clips for me.

The term clipless has been dead in the water since the 20th century and can't be explained to newcomers without a tedious history lesson about roadies and toe straps or something.

Why arent they just called strapless?

Because then the ones with the straps will be called stapons and saying you are going riding with strapons could lead to all sorts of interesting conversations.

I'm sure many would consider toeclips and straps perverse.

Yes but some of us did most of their cycling in the 20th century.

Yes but some of us did most of their cycling in the 20th century.

And some of us were just getting started. I vividly remember reading MBUK as a teenager and wondering why the hell they were referring to SPD's as clipless when they were designed for clipping into.

Pre-Google confusion like that could take years to resolve.

Slow news day?

If they don't have toe clips I guess they are clipless?

Had this discussion with my early teenage son last weekend.

Calling them clipless is stupid was his conclusion (and he has toeclips on his school bike).

Those "flats" up there are clearly peggles.

ACW, CW, tortoise, hare? Suspension set up is a mystery, a dark art. I at least have a shock pump, but some mates don't even know they need one
