So I just blew a hole in the side of my trusty Bontrager clipless shoes and upon inspection found a few big splits in the sole, so it's probably about time for a change.

Looking for something with either a mix of buckles and velcro or a boa-type system (no laces!) and a decent chunky tread.

I always liked the look of Mavic shoes but heard a fair few negative things about the quality. Anyone used em recently? Are they any good?

What's the shoe-de-jour if you're not into big clumpy flats or disco slippers..?

Cheers

I'm a big fan of Shimano shoes, good VFM and seem to last for ages.

Can’t grumble at the Shimano range.

Mine are giro terraduro. Good fit, good on the bike and easy to walk in without falling over.

Shimano here. No problems. I have BOA and it works every time.

I haven’t liked any of the Northwave shoes I’ve had for the fit - especially the mtb ones.

So far all the rest of my recent spd shoes have been shimano and they’ve been great. Less bling than some other brands but they’re good value and last well.

Shimano or Specialized at a budget that suits, I prefer the latter but there's nowt wrong with the former.

Shimano all the way for me:
- very durable
- very good prices
- very diverse range
- highly consistent sizing across the range. Once you figure out your size you can order whatever model you want and know it will fit
- even if they're not the very best top pick at every range level, they rate generally very close to the top

Another +1 for the Terraduros. Comfier than the Shimano ones I've tried, ace to walk in but still plenty stiff enough to put the power down. Built very well too, mine are 4 years old now and aside from the soles looking a bit worn they are in great condition. They could be lighter (but maybe this would make them less durable?) and have a BOA rather than a ratchet, but those insignificant quibbles aside they are damn good.

I can’t add anything to this.

Another Terraduro fan here. The first pair the sole started to peel off, but replaced under warranty. The second pair have been absolutely fine and are maybe 3 years old now. Had them on my feet for about 15hrs on Saturday.

Reasonably splashproof (no daft mesh) and there's a really nice roll to the sole, so even though they're pretty stiff, they're good to walk in Also a proper rubber tread rather than the hard plastic some racier shoes use - maybe not so good for CX style thick mud running up hills, but a damn sight better on wet rock!

I have a pair of Mavic Crossmax from about 4 years ago. Still going strong despite being in use almost daily in all that time.

Another +1 on the Terraduro.

Use mine for pretty much everything.

Consistently 2 sizes too small?

I have 3 years old Mavic Crossmax Thermo winter shoes and they are still in good shape apart from the Boa copies they use. Three snapped laces and two broken dials so far. A dials+lace kit is only 10 euros a pair from Mavic, so it's not terrible. Soles are very good for walking in snow or mud.

Specialized here and my shoe of choice. I tried some Shimanos, but they seemed a bit more plasticky and less solid.
Spesh also have a range of different insoles you can buy if you need more/ less arch support in your shoe
