on the wife's road bike, distinctive click click click every revolution though I can't reproduce it on the stand only when it's being ridden. The bearings seem smooth and well adjusted. Got me stumped.

I put up a similar post a few weeks ago (rs81, same hub I think?) - I opened the bearings up and regreased and it went away. Not sure it was the grease though, as there was plenty of fresh stuff in there; I guess I readjusted the cups/cones at the same time and my money's on that

Drop of oil on each spoke hole.
spokes most likely - so oil as above and/or test tension
Also check the valve collar isnt loose, they've been the cause of many a mystery click.
