Anyone got any tips for cleaning bar tape?

No matter how careful I was when cleaning my bike this morning I managed to get my oily hands on the white bar tape!

No amount of cleaning will stop white bar tape looking like gray bar tape after a few rides.

I have the Fizik stuff, looks as good as new... It's a 'leathery' finish though. The suede-like ones go mucky quickly...

Bontrager stuff comes up good as new as well.

Still swapping for black next time though.

when I was stupid enough to have white bar tape 🙂 and if I ever cleaned it, I used whatever kitchen/ bathroom cleaner was kicking around the house. the foamy ones worked best with minimal scrubbing.

Wee bit of isoprpyl alcohol will do it- not too much, don't want it to soak in, just enough to dampen a cloth. WD40 or similiar will leave an oily residue.

Baby wipes.
Minimal fuss for, so I read, maximum result.

tour rider with new tape at each stage - white is (just) acceptable...

normal rider without pro team mechanic - get some black tape..

Am I odd in that I like the look of grubby white bar-tape? Shows that the bike gets ridden.

Personally I think grubby white tape looks horrible but I don't need to show that my bike gets ridden
