Been using Fenwick's Stealth road lube last yr or so but it gets pretty manky after a few hundred miles. Anything better out there for largely dry weather road riding ? Didn't get on with Squirt on road as gets gungy although do use on MTB.
I found the same with squirt on the road. The manufacturers say it's static attracting rubber particles.
I use silkolene hot wax but remove all of the surface excess before and after the first ride. It's pretty good then.
Pro Link Pro Gold is the best.
White Lightning Epic Ride keeps things nice and clean and lasts long enough for most rides, though ironically it can wash off in epic weather.
I wouldn't want anything much thinner really.
have used Epic ride in summer and winter, clean stuff, just not many places sale it
Rock n Roll on all my bikes
viking Juice
Chain L.
Using pedros ice wax ATM. Very clean, but doesn't seem to last that well. Might be better on the road though
I'm using fenwicks stealth too. It's one of the best for 100 mile rides, doesn't need a mid ride lube even in the rain.
Squirt doesn't last the distance and clogs up on the cassette on the road bike. I also like whit lightning but it doesn't last on long distance rides.
Sewing machine oil on mine, works as good as anything else I've tried and I get it free from work
Rock N Roll, blue for MTB & Gold for Road
some good ideas, thanks
Switched to Fenwick's Stealth Road recently after getting frustrated by Finish Line Dry Lube, which runs clean but wears off very quickly especially if you ever get caught in the rain.
Quite impressed with Stealth - runs quiet and I don't find it too dirty (especially compared to MTB wet lube)
I picked up some Pure from halfords, needed something in a hurry for a 600km audax. It rained and it was ace.
Cassette and chain are still clean.
I apply once a week, as usual with light lubes, but I'm going to use it for my cross season as I don't want to collect dirt.
Finish line Ceramic on MTB and Road.
Do you have a reminder on your phone to ask this question every year Iain?
Greg - yup 🙂
I found the same with squirt on the road. The manufacturers say it's static attracting rubber particles.
Interesting - i'm still using it but find the outer plates of the chain need a good wipe every few months.
I use fenwicks stealth road but I wouldn't stay it was "clean" and what is the "air drying formula" - it stays wet to touch.
I like squirt but it balls up and the gobs of muck need knocking off every now and again. White lightning clean ride is similar.
I have some muc off ceramic in both wet and dry versions to try sometime too.
thanks, think I'll order some of the White Lightning Epic and see how it compares to the Stealth. I have some of the Pro Link Pro Gold that I have used a few times on the cx/Tourer...
I use rock 'n' roll lubes, blue in winter on the commuter, gold on the dry day commuter and Absolute Dry Lube on the best road bike.
But as you live in the west of scotland you may as well wait until next March before you buy any 🙂
Edit: I used to use the white lightning clean ride stuff and its great but the absolute dry is better.
Tried rock n roll extreme (blue one) on road bike and by 40 miles chain was too noisy to bear thinking about any greater distance on it so switched back to Fenwicks Stealth applied sparingly and as directed 24 hrs before riding and left to dry. Old towel then given a once over rub along entire chain to remove any excess prior to riding.
Only needed to reapply every 150-200 miles depending on rain. Obviously not self cleaning but again old bath towels work a treat and I work on the basis the stuff right down by the pins is best being left there as it's probably the ceramic part of the lube.
