Hi as per the title really need a set of brakes for a rigid singlespeed 29er, the hayes that are on it are awful and need replacing unsure if the Clarks for a real budget of around £45 for everything or something a bit better.
Thoughts?
The M2's have great feel but not blown away by the power - similar to mini mono's power wise with stock pads
With Shimano you're buying a warranty and getting free brakes.
I’ve got M2s on one of my bikes. Also got some 2010 slx and 2012 Deore to compare with.
Power of the M2 is on a par. Certainly enough with 180 rotors for my 95kg.
Levers aren’t as nice. 2 finger design and might be hard to get position relative to shifter right. Quite on/off feel but so are shimano. I paid £36 for my pair in 2918 and very happy for the price. Haven’t needed any attempt to on and been on 2 different bikes.
If it’s new M2 or secondhand Shimano I’d take the M2’s every time. I haven’t had a great experience with Shimano mtb brakes. Although bizarrely my road hydraulics have been ok until now - I think the rear caliper seals are beginning to play up after 2 years.
With Shimano you’re buying a warranty and getting free brakes.
Not with secondhand ones though
I've got Clarkes brakes on my rigid SS. They're great for that application.
M2’s for the money are very good. As mentioned stock pads aren’t the best but £45 for complete set of brakes/rotors etc is phenomenal value. Ran mine in rigid 29er all winter no issues
M2 easily, very pleased with mine.
They're actually not a million miles away from older model deores (even use the shape same pads)...
I have a pair on my lad's pub bike. Have to confess I'm not keen on the feel of them coming from Shimano, but they work OK.
We've got M2's on my wife's bike & clouts on our daughter's.
Though I've still got Shimano on my hardtail, that is no-doubt only till the break again now the warranty is up. The last 3 or 4 sets of Shimano have been nothing but hassle.
