Hi all,

Firstly, I know I should be able to get an answer by simply phoning the insurance company, which I plan to do in the morning, but thought I may as well ask on here to see other people's experiences, and see if any one has any tips.

Anyway, I have both my bikes covered by my parents home insurance, through CIS. Hardtail is under £1000 in value, so is not specified, big bike is over 1k, so is.

Added a few things to the insurance today, so was chatting to the guy about bike insurance. From what I could make out, damage caused by the bike/parts failing from wear and tear, during modification/repair, or simple failure (ie that which warranty would cover) is not covered by the insurance. And therefore, damage caused by me, is covered.

I ask, as I snapped the Pikes on my hardtail on Christmas eve. I totally forgot about this when chatting to the insurance man. However, would I be right in saying that I may be able to claim for these, as the damage was caused by me (I was doing a jump in the dark and got the bars snagged on my Santa costume...)?

Again, I know I can phone and get an answer, which I plan to do tomorrow, but just wondering if anyone has any similar experiences, whether you had any luck etc? Especially knowing the silly fine print/technicalities insurance companies love...

Ta, Duane.

Well, not wanting to put a damper on your hopes but after an accident I had a year ago and my experiences with insurance companies since then, I believe you'd be lucky to find you are insured.

Phone any insurance company now and most of not all of them will say you're not covered for accidental damage outside the home unless you request a special stipulation (and associated surcharge).

For info, I rode into a car on my bike. My home insurance didn't cover me. I complained to the Financial Ombudsman and they told me tough crap. I then checked with my new home insurers (many months later), same story. Lots of people think they're covered on their home insurance for accidental damage when the truth is, they're not unless they've taken out an additional policy.

Good luck though.
