A while back I got a roll of self amalgamating tape from an online bike shop and used it to tape up a bike's chainstays. I since got some self amalgamating tape from Maplin but that tape is a lot less wide (19mm instead of maybe about twice that) and a lot less thick than the other stuff I had. The chunky stuff seemed far more suitable for chainstays and for a few other applications.

I've recently been looking for the thicker/wider style of self amalgamating tape, but without any luck. I can't remember which online shop I got it from - it may have been Bike Tart, in which case they don't do it anymore.

I dimly recall seeing a thread on here some time ago that explained that the chunky self amalgamating tape was a different material the more common tape, but I can't find it in order to confirm that. Is anyone aware of what I'm asking about and if so do you know where I could get some?

Not necessarily self amalgamating, but serves the same purpose: MarshGuard Slapper Tape

I believe it's uncured EPDM tape used for roofing.

I have used 3M 2228 tape for chain stays etc. Available in a choice of widths, including 25mm which works fine for chain stays.

The Mastik tape seems to be similar to what I used before, except that stuff wasn't adhesive except to itself. I may give the Mastik tape a go though.

Looking at pics of the Mashguard slapper tape it looks to be exactly the same as 3M 2228 tape, except about 3 times the price.

I wouldn't say 3 times - 11£ for 1m (MarshGuard) vs. 27£ for 3m (3M).
Still, good to know the source, as with Stan's rim tape.

I'm considering using some 3M Velcro for the exposed bits of chainstay that are getting chain slapped. The soft side shouldn't pick up too much crap and its bloody sticky. I would Luke to find something with a smoother finish though. Maybe a neoprene?

The 3M/MarshGuard "tape" is smooth enough and can be wiped clean when necessary.

That looks like a price for 50mm wide 2228, the 25mm (like Marshguard) stuff is about half that price.
