Would it be possible to half chrome a frame? The bike is steel and i would like one half chrome and the over half a deep gloss colour , by one half i mean one side so when looking side on it would be chrome the from the over half the colour . A bit like Klein did back in the day with their pearlesant . Does any body know if it is possible ?
Lots of old road bikes had chromed lugs, dropouts, and fork lowers. I believe that you will need to plate the whole frame per http://davesbikeblog.squarespace.com/blog/2009/10/29/chrome.html
There are also chrome paint systems that may be better for what you want to do. http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=132744
I've got an eighties Italian road bike that's chromed and then painted on top with a see through paint
Looks great, but I think chroming is ridiculously expensive these days
Chroming is super expensive IF you can find anyone who can still do it
The environmental issues and the difficulty of the process mean that a lot of people who used to do it no longer do.
I know someone who spent months trying to find someone for a restoration and in the end went for high g gloss silver paint as it was such a pain.
I've also seen several frames go wrong when chroming - like when a company used to chroming car bumpers tries to do a steel frame with thin-wall tubing, they dip it for too long and etch big holes in it.
I'm not a fan of chroming.
