I've got a wideangle that I got from swinnerton's in stoke on trent.

It doesn't get much use but is a nicer ride than the bfe it replaced.

2014 Surface with the 142mm rear dropouts - found the frame on eBay and built it up.

Dont know whether it’s the hand-builtness or the steel or the build or the geo or the cachet but I love it.

Got a works components Angleset for when I get some forks with a longer steerer.

Got a 2015 Samurai 65. Got it from Shorelines when they were still doing them. Love it. Amazing bike. Recently fitted 1.5 angleset to it. Certainly put off my thinking I needed a newer one. Particularly as they seem to have jumped up wildly in price. My frame was £1150 then but Hotlines are quoting an approximate price of £1599 for the Canadian built frames and £650 for the Taiwan versions.

Theres a shop up near Inverness, Basecamp MTB that sells them (£1550 for Canadian frame, £3899 Full GX build, £699 Taiwan frame, £2849 full GX build, extra £160 on top of that for Reverb). Given the slice they take for themselves though I think its cheaper to buy a whole bike from Chromag yourself, have it shipped over, pay the import and upgrade to a Reverb for the price they wanted for a bike without a dropper. Those prices are from early May this year.

Having said that I would and probably will buy another at some point. No questions asked. People say they're only 4130 Steel. People that don't know what they're on about. Chris Dekerf and Mike Truelove wouldn't be building for them if they thought they were cr@p. Its their reputation on the line as much as Chromags.

Where are you located? Happy to take you out on mine. I'm in Glasgow

Rootdown BA in XL bought second hand from here from a chap in Poland. Hardly used.

My first foray with 29” wheels. I think i meed to get my fork serviced and put a Luftkppe in but it handles evrything you throw at it. Also need to possibly to move to 203mm rotors.

Earier hardtail i had was a Bfe and the Rootdown BA is just  way better, but then again being Canadian i may be biased!

Climbs efficiently and descends as fast as you can handle it. I’ve ridden with a friend’s husband in Squamish and he/it handled all the black runs with aplomb.

I’ve come to realise that my full sus conpensates for a serious lack in skill!!

Rootdown 29er here. One of the older pre BA versions. It's awesome! climbs well, descends well, feels realy solid and most importantly the best fitting bike i've ever owned. The only thing that I'd ever swap it for is the newer version and then only because I've got a hankering to try 650B+.

I started looking at the Surface as a replacement for my SC Chameleon but then changed to a Rootdown as it's cheaper. I'm slightly put off by the Press Fit BB though. Anyone else thinking the same ?

It struck me later that it had a pressfit BB - the creaks come and go but ti doesn't hamper the enjoyment on the bike. I've learned to ignore it when it does happen.

I'm on a Mk1 Rootdown, the 135mmQR rear version with no stealth dropper port.

It's bloody amazing!  Funnest bike I have ever owned. It does need decent volume tyres (I'm running Minion DHF 2.3 (rear) and 2.5) and a chunky fork to get the best out of it.

The only thing I might change it for would be a Primer or Surface i.e. one of BC built frames or something completely custom by someone else.

I ordered mine from Shorelines about 3 years ago, if I was buying today I would either source one direct or use biketheworld.be as they seem to have stock at least some of the time.

One word of warning, it is almost mandatory to build them up with at least Chromag bars, stem, chainrings, pedals and saddle, which are not cheap options!

I used to have a 26 samurai which I rode for ages then sold and bought back, then sold again and tried to find it again but it had vanished. Never done that with any other bike.
