The threads on the driveside of my BB are knacked requiring a visit to BETD for a helicoil insert. My LBS has recommended spending out on a Chris King due to the 5 year warranty and ability to re-grease without mucking around removing the cups (although with the Hope I had previously I just popped the seals out with the cups still installed so don't see that much advantage TBH). The guy at BETD rates them as well. However, over £120 is still an eye watering amount to spend on a BB (especially at this time of year) so I'm considering an Uberbike ceramic for £60 which got a great review on Bikeradar. Thoughts please!
Just buy Hope.
Nah, I don't think the sealing on them is that good, have had 3 of them now and bearings seem to get contaminated grease really quickly.
I'm with the first Dave on this one.
If you can't afford King, get Hope. If you can't afford Hope, get Shimano as they're pennies.
If you're chewing through BB's also look at getting your frame faced as bearing misalignment can be the cause of premature BB deaths.
i can heartily recommend the Gusset ext24, it's not *quite* as nicely finished as the hope, but it's much better sealed* - and uses standard sized bearings.
my Gussest has done (way) over 10,000 km on my commuter - it's still running fine, the grease is still clean.
it cost £25.
(*the 'sealing' on my hope BB is crap really, there's just a rubbish plastic baffle covering the cartridge seals)
I doubt if you've gone through 3 Hope ceramics though. Different bearing altogether. Mine justs lasts and lasts (and I use a jetwash).
With a Hope, Gusset or Praxis you'll need a drift/hammer to get the bearings out and that may not be good for your helicoil. It's the method of servicing the King that's a big part of it's appeal to me, even more so for your requirements. Ceramics should delay the need for the hammer but I doubt they're all the same.
The King BB is good. Expensive yes but I was going through HT2s too quickly and got fed up of throw-away stuff like that. Same sort of argument as fitting a King or Cane Creek 110 headset but much more practical gains at the BB. Really easy job to service.
Good point jameso, ta.
Yeah, ordinarily I'd say Gusset too but the King does have a possible advantage there. A repair ought to be durable enough to take it (and be happy removing the BB to replace bearings if you want to avoid whacking it in the frame) but maybe it's a question best never answered...
If you can find one the Pace RC80 bottom bracket was a regrease in frame with tool, just pop seal, push in tool, squirt with grease gun, and pop seal back in, and away you go, obviously after putting back the cranks.
One thing I would say though is that getting the circlip and seal off the king imo is a fairly delicate job and the seal is quite thin material, the King tool will use grease pressure to push that seal off harmlessly but I don't have one and it adds cost.
If getting the seals off your old Hope in-situ was easy for you then the hope ceramic could be a good bet to save some £ and have a known-qty sort of job.
The sealing on the Hopes is pretty crap though so you have to do it more than you should (unless the ceramic ones are different?). Tempted by the Uberbike ceramic though as the sealing sounds to be much better
CK well worth the money.. fit once ride.. been faultless.. where as hope and shimano.. lets not go there.. imo rubbish
I thought ceramic bearings where run dry!? I've seen my lbs using a thin liquid like an oil to re lube his ceramic wheel bearings once a season and even then it was only a few drops.
Acros ceramic - 6 years and counting here with no servicing and three different frames.
You could also look at Phil Wood. If you can find anyone with stock.
CK seal and spring washer easy to get from Aspire. Get one in your spares box for when you might need one.
I recently resurrected a 'seized' CK BB. It turned out to be old grease gumming the bearings together. An hour with a couple of rags and soem WD40 and internally back to new. No corrosion, no pitting.
You do get what you pay for.
Is the CK BB guarantee the same as the Headset guarantee? ie it has to be installed by a CK certified mechanic etc?
Dunno but for BETD to warranty the helicoil they have to install the bb which could be a sticking point
