So there I am popping my CK headset cups out of their umpteenth frame they've been in and I have a moment thinking about how well they've lasted.... And then one of them won't spin. It moves smoothly about 2mm and then just locks, rather than, say, grinding the whole way round. Which is odd. Can the bearings be replaced?

you can pop the seals of and then degrease/dry/regrease the bearings. If that doenst work drop them an email and you can send them back for repair.

Yes you can service the bearings, there should be videos on their website. I've never done the headsets, mine are still ok, but the hub bearings are easy enough

I think the seal kits are available, usually the bearings just need a clean with WD40 and re-greasing.

Yes IMO unless you've ridden it like that and the races are pitted you can revive it by popping out the snap ring, flushing with lots of degreaser, and re-lubing.

If they are dead then they do carry a 10 year warranty, and you can repair/replace them anyway! I wouldn't bother sending them back, just order new bearings from somewhere like Aspire Velotech.

I've never seen headset bearings on Aspire, the headset service kit is $16 though.

You're right, they just do hub bearings. Sure they used to do them, remember thinking they were very good value really.

wd-40 or somthing else, flush, grease in, and they should be smooth sailing, otherwise you stole from your granddad, who dident give a damm, about maintance too! 🙂
-if your grease like every 6 month, just pop the seal, grease in, you will have them for years........

I believe the inner race is press fit into the cups, so must go back to king for replacement.
10 year warranty though. A good soak in degreaser usually works.

King bearings are supposed to be regreased once per year, per the instruction leaflet that comes with the headset.

Many people don't bother though, or don't read the leaflet and are unaware that they should be greased annually.

Easy job.

If you've been greasing yours and they are knackered, time for some new ones.
