So I am thinking of going for a compact 50-34, with a 12-27 casette for my CX/commuter build.

Seeing as the bike will be used on the road 90-95% of the time is this the right choice? i wouldnt mind trying a bit of CX/offroad, but if i am only going to dabble I dont think my decision should be based around that. if i like it I could maybe switch the casette/chainrings at a later date?

My road bike commuter currently has a 54/32/40 and a 12-25 casette. I dont really use the 40 at all, and use the 54 most of the time (the 32 and 40 are too worn hence the new bike build). I dont want to get something that doesnt have a gear similar to the 54-12 high gear as i use that a lot on the flat downhill, if this is the case should i really be looking at the double 53-39 with maybe an 11-27 casette? what about going up to an 11-36 incase I need a granny gear for any climbs?

I dont think I really understand gearing properly!! 😯

someone please explain I am confuzzled!

50/34 and a 11/28.
You must be flying on 54-12 (or pedalling at 40rpm).
Edit-90rpm on 54-12 is 32mph!!
