Current setup is a laptop for TR and an iPad for watching stuff on. I would do both on the laptop but it's wheezing badly and struggles with a TR-Netflix combo. A very (very) quick look on eBay and there are 9"(ish) Android tablets for around £60. Given that it would only really be used for TR (with an ANT+ adapter) are these things worth getting? The laptop takes an age to get itself going, so would be great to be able to just jump on the bike and go (in a stationary fashion)

Have an older version of (but Android):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Point-View-8-Inch-Windows-Tablet/dp/B0119RCZ14

Still works - but don't use it outdoors any more(what I planned for...).

At daylight / sunlight no chance to read the screen... 😥

I'm using a Huawei MediaPad for this very purpose and it's ideal. I got it as a result of a call from EE (who just so happened to be ringing some of their most valued/longstanding customers out of courtesy - OK so I fell for their sales patter) and pay a minimal monthly charge on top of my contract. I've found I've ended up using it for more than just suffering in the turbo dungeon. Pornhub, for example, has taken a real hammering...

Hey @legend!

My name is Bryce and I work for TrainerRoad.

As someone who previously worked on our support team, I have a hard time recommending what you call a "cheapo" android tablet. While some people experience no issues, we definitely see a disproportionate number of users with these types of tablets experiencing issues. Whether it be crashing problems or ANT+ driver issues they tend to be more finicky.

Since you already have an iPad, I assume that your intention is to use the entry-level Android tablet for TR and the iPad for entertainment, is that right? If so, it would be a better choice to perform TR workouts with the iPad and use the Android tablet for media/entertainment since there is a much lower processing demand within apps like Netflix.

Cheers!

Can your phone run TrainerRoad? If so, maybe that's an option? Could probably output the phone display to a monitor if you want a bigger screen.

You can absolutely use TrainerRoad with your phone as long as you're on iOS or Android 🙂

I love trainerroad and it's a lot less processor heavy than its competitors. And I prefer using it.

But...I would like to see a Linux version 🙂

Would make it even easier to run on older hardware.

(Although as Bryce says it runs fine on a phone)
