I'd like to upgrade the shagged 1x9 drive train on my hard tail.

I've seen an 11-46 SLX 11 speed bundle (cassette/mech/shifter) from BikeDiscount for around 130 posted. Anything better than that for the money?

Real budget option is a 9 speed Deore mech and 11-40 Sunrace cassette for about 50 quid (keep my existing shifter). Opinions to talk me into/out of that idea also welcomed 🙂

Are your chainset / chain rings ok? And how did it get to 1x9? What I mean is - have you already chopped and changed stuff to get to 1x9 ? EG chopped down 3x or a something else?

You may need new cranks too as the bolts for the chain ring are different on the 11sp and i dont think you can use your old 9 speed cranks/chain ring on 11 speed.

I’d go slx for the bigger range, or even 1x10 deore with a wide range cassette if it’s a chunk cheaper.

Echoing everyone else - you’ll likely need to change your chainring - have you got a cut down triple chainset and has it got a sensible bcd (e.g. 104) so you can get a suitable NW ring for it?

My cranks are an elderly Deore triple, with a Superstar (I think) oval NW chain ring. I think/hope this is probably all OK to reuse. The chain ring looks in decent nick; and the cranks work OK on this frame (NS Eccentric Evo) -- although strictly speaking the frame should run a set of boost cranks, the chainline is OK with the ring on the outer position of the triple.

Tee hee.

1x9 with an 11-32t cassette was a bit of an experiment. I figured: what the hell, if all else fails I'll just develop the strength of Hulk.

The experiment was a partial success! But an unexpected side effect was that my thighs are starting to get a bit too wide for my tighter jeans (this is not a humblebrag since I started with the sort of physique usually described with phrases such as: "a streak of piss"). So it'll be a false economy in the end 'cos I'll cost myself more in new jeans than I save on new bike bits.

The cranks should be fine; I've got 1x11 on some ancient Deore XT cranks originally designed for 3x9. A single-ring specific chainset does look nicer, and it's also easier to swap chainrings (e.g. to put on a 28t for somewhere really steep).

Microshift Advent if you can find it.

I recall being quite excited reading about this last year, but as you allude to, I've not actually seen it for sale :-/

OK, so a bit of searching turns up at least one UK retailer:

https://kidsracing.co.uk/search?type=product&q=*microshift*

So long as you're happy buying your grown-up MTB parts from Kids Racing UK the 9 speed 11-42 setup is available for about 90 quid currently, and has a clutch mech.

Interesting...
