I'm thinking of getting myself a cheap singlespeed for the winter, and don't want to canibalise any of my other bikes.

My main wants are decent brakes, a decent fork, maybe Reba or something, steel would be nice.

What do people suggest?

You'll be wanting to cone down to the SS Euros next 🙂

give Tim @ Sideways a bell, he's got a superb looking DeKerf going for good money.

LOL, you and I must have different ideas of "cheapish". I doubt a DeKerf, lovely though they are, is going to be within the budget I had in mind for a cheap winter hack.

On-one inbred frame @ 125, reba forks @ 250. wheels, brakes and finishing kit take you to around £600. Or go second hand

For £500 he could have my carbon Massi!

I would just keep an eye on the classifieds, if it's just gonna be a winter sh*tter, i wouldn't bother too much about it being a nice one.

I would however, stay away from Kona Units, they're a bit snap-tastic.

Dropout wise: I'm a huge fan of sliding dropouts, slot dropouts annoyed me greatly and i'm currently using vertical with a tensioner which isn't that bad, but not as clean as i'd have liked
