Hello
So I’m in the process of cobbling together some roof bars so I can actually take my bike somewhere.
Has anyone a recommendation for a cheap roof mounted rack that has jaws wide enough for a carbon MTB (intense)?
I think my roof bars are an older style oval alloy Thule model, if that matters?
Also, what are people’s thoughts in general on clamping carbon frames?
I could get a wheel-holding rack but they’re quite a lot more expensive and clunky.

Thule 598
If you’ve spent the money on a carbon frame, you may aswell get a decent rack got it and you’ve already got the most expensive part (roof bars).
I'd go for the Yakima Highroad, if compatible with your bars. I have the Thule Upride and its not great, lots of wobble at the front which the Yakima doesnt suffer from apparently. Around £150 online.
Thanks
Well, I had a job when I bought the bike 4yrs ago now am a skint (mature) stoodent, hence needing something reasonably cheap!
What’s the difference between the Yakima high road and front loader, apart from £40? They both seem out of stock anyway.
Is the Thule 598 considered ok to clamp carbon frames?
My carbon bikes have been going on Thule 532s with no issue..... Plenty of the on the second hand market cheap.
Once you accept that the clamp isn't to hold the bike in place it's to keep it upright....it doesn't need to be smashed tight.
Everything from sub 20lb xc bikes to my ibis mojo hd and even my propel.
RRR, where are you based? I have a Thule 9105 that you can have cheap, been modified to fit my old honda civic, be easy to mod to fit any hatchback.
I'm in SW Scotland if you're nearby.
Nobeer- thanks, kind of you but I’m in north Derbyshire.
Also it seems my car shouldn’t take a boot rack .. assume the window implodes or could be because there’s only a glass lip to attach to not metal?
They aren't cheap but I've got a Yakima high road and can't fault it. Once they are back in stock I expect I will be picking up a second to carry the other half's bike, even though that has a fairly traditional frame and doesn't need to have the front wheel mount.
