Having a look around at the new Shimano XTR 12 speed and wondering if I can go 12 speed relatively cheaply.
Seen a sunrise mz90 12 speed cassette for £70
Shimano XTR derailleur for £162
Shimano XTR shifter for £81
Shimano 12 speed chain £40 (unsure if its needed or a 11 speed chain is ok)

I already have m8000 crankset so wouldn't need that. Am I right in thinking that that is all I would need?

Are you fixed on Shimano?

SRAM GX* derailleur £80, shifter £30, chain £20 (+ Sunrace cassette)
or even less with the Sunrace derailleur £60, shifter £30, chain £20

* seems the GX derailleur and shifter can be had for less than NX... Point me at the £70 derailleur I might buy a spare.

Forgot to say no SRAM as I don’t want to pay to be a beta tester for their stuff. Also I have ispec shomano brake levers.

Imo sram release stuff and the user does the testing. Look at the gx rear mech and how many have had to be warrantied. Shimano release stuff after its been tested and its 100% ready for the consumer.

I've got a used gx cassette, shifter and mech that would make a decent start - 50t sprocket has lost a tooth but still works fine. Mech hasn't seen masses of use, shifter in good nick too - matchmaker style clamp. £50 posted.

Just for balance, have you seen all the threads about Shimano brakes that are shonky?

The problem with the GX Eagle mech was cured with an updated jockey wheel. The fundamental design was right from the off.

Anyway,I don't mean to take the thread off topic mate.

XTR 12 has only just been released, has had a handful of real world testers and no updates. The sram stuff has been out picked up what seems to be the one flaw over the range and been fixed.

Anyway I won't buy shimano after string of mechs blew up in 2006 😉
