My shimano rs 10 rear wheel keeps breaking spokes... Doing my nut in so considering replacing...

Merlin have rs 500's for silly cheap money. Any comments good or bad? Going on the winter road/cx race bike.

Been loads of threads about this recently.

I got some RS30's from Merlin, they've been ace.
Not sure if I've just been lucky though, tbh.

Had two sets of R500's. First set was ok but rear needed truing after not a lot of miles. Second set broke a spoke after not a lot of miles. I am/ was a lardy ****er so put the problems down to this. A couple of the lighter lads in the clubs run them with no problems.

I'd rather something with standard spokes and nipple sizes than the rs 10 and above seem to have.

not had any problems with my RS10s.
as training wheels I've probably put in the biggest mileage through them in all conditions.
R500s are at the bottom of the shimano wheel ladder. I've not had any but probably go for something like the RS30s which seemed to be on special offer all over the place.

Been using a r500 wheelset for the last few thousand miles throughout the winter. They've stood up well and only required a true a couple of times. I've also replaced the grease in the hubs which improved them further.

For the £65 I paid they seem an absolute bargain. I considered the other rs10+rs30 but came up against the same spoke issue. I believe Merlin have them for a similar price right now? I'd happily get another set - oh and i'm not the lightest 6 3" 14 stone..

Thanks marcher - that's my thinking. Merlin are 64ish the pair, conventional spokes. I'm happy maintaining the cup and cone hubs, it's the spokes breaking mid ride on the rs10s which is doing my nut.
