Been asked to recommend a bike for someone to ride the waymarked routes in the FOD.
He's only got £300 to spend.
What would you advise?
And no spending more isn't an option. 😉

A secondhand 26, you'll get a nice second hand bike for that money

Yup, decent used bike all day long. It's a buyers market really.

My £300 Specialised Hardrock is still going after 10 years, everything wobbles (headset, bb, cranks, wheel bearings) and its not worth repairing but it got me started, rode a lot of Surrey Hills trails and is still used regularly as the loaner. I did change the rubbish forks for Marzocchi's.

Take time and find your mate a decemt used 26 bike

Cheesybeanz has it - second hand and pink bike, be fussy. Job done.

A s/h bike though is just as likely though to need money spending on it. And once you're replaced the drive train, pads, cables and tubed you'll have no change from a £100.

If advising someone else, go for the low risk option.

This is what I'm thinking as I don't think he's much of a turner of spanners.

Low risk is a 300 quid hard tail for sure.

Carrera often have decent offers for the non brand snob Cyclist. I realise this means your buddy would not be able to ride with your good self but carera bikes are well speced and keenly priced esp if one of you has BC membership 😉

And I'm a staunch second hand buyer of bikes for me and buddies ....but I always end up giving them a tart up before handing them over. A chain and cassette + cables are almost always a given.

Terry.
The Carrera range was my first advise to him.
No need for you to worry he'll not be riding with me. 😉

I bought a lightley used Voodoo Bizango a couple of years back for £300 - it has been great - only the headset has needed replacement so far.

If you look for those bought, but not used stuff there seems to be a lot of it about!

Also bought a 4 year old cube for my daughter last week that still had the pimples on the tyres! - £150

Carrera/Voodoo especially if there are offers.

Decathlon as well, never seen a bad Rockrider in terms of value.

Having the Dune fatbike from Go Outdoors their Two-two 26er gets good reviews and is often around the £330 mark if they're doing the 15% discount thing. Gets good reviews for the money.
