Hi all, can anyone recommend a cheap-ish basic heart rate monitor watch, one that doesn't have a chest strap. Don't need or want something that can link with phones, apps or gps, just want to keep an eye on heart rate when out on bike, don't want to upload or track or anything else. Been googling but seem to be expensive all singing and dancing or funny named cheapo things on amazon. Polar M200 seems ok but it has all the fancy stuff I don't want, anything else like that? Does anything simple and half decent exist?

Thanks

Mio Fuse is worth a look. Maybe now discontinued, but you might find one cheap.

Recognise that none of the optical ones are great on the bike, I'm guessing because of the bumping around.  You might want to get one that will also work with a strap if necessary.  Other than that there was a thread on here very recently where a lot of people were recommending the forerunner 35

If you don't connect it to your phone my Vivoactive HR will do dumb HR

I think most do sync, upload etc as it's actually more useful in the end of the day than looking at an instantaneous reading every so often.

I have a garmin vivoactive hr, boxed and excellent condition for sale. £70 if you’re interested. Probably better than a cheap one.

Garmin FR30?

It's about the cheapest optical HR jobbies going and all the fancy trickery of the FR35 (ANT+, or other sensors/connectivity) has been chopped to meet a price point... It's still a GPS doodah but that can be turned off to save battery life.

But it's still going to be £100

While the mio fuse can apparently be had for £50 at tredz:

I had a fuse- It’s good.

I have a Garmin vivofit I think- I’m after £30, but I leant it to someone off here and am awaiting its return.

It will broadcast to Garmin but reads on wrist anyway.

I've got a fitbit charge HR that was replaced under warranty, as it's got a cracked screen but hardly noticeable, was going to put it on eBay with no reserve if you are interested For a few.beer token? Or you can warranty replacement aka new one for £70?

Thanks all, will look into some of those.

justridemtb might be interested in that, I'll look at specs info later, but I'm not going to get a chance to get on a PC today so might get back to you this evening.

Basically I'm in my 50s but my mind is still 25 so I try to go fast and hard and find I'm getting tired and not recovering as well as I used to, commute every day and ride mtb some weekday evenings and weekends, but fitness not getting any better, so want to remind myself sometimes to slow down, I've tried telling myself to do this but I gradually speed up again, so thought a simple hr monitor would be useful to keep in recovery zones rather than 110 % all the time.

Best optical HRM by far and can be worn on upper arm

https://www.outdoorgb.com/p/Scosche_Rhythm_Plus_Heart_Rate_Monitor_Armband/

Used one for a year now and miles better tan any other I had, including chest straps and Mio (Both the Mio's failed within a year!)

I know that you stated "not wanting it to hook up with your mobile phone", but some of these devices need an app on your phone to function properly...

have a shufty at the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 from Aliexpress or Gearbest, they are cheap enough and the manufacturer updates the firmware on a regular basis...

I had the Mi Band 2 along with a few other cheap apps from Playstore in order to get it to work the way I wanted....I now have a Samsung gear fit 2 and it is a total piece of crap... I wish I had not sold my Mi band 2... there is a Mi Band 3 to be released in the UK in the next few months...
