Cheap, easy ebike conversion

Perhaps half a dozen times a year I ride in to a crag somewhere to climb. Carrying climbing gear on a bike is somewhat tiresome and a way of converting my existing rigid MTB to an ebike would save a whole lot of time and effort on what is already likely to be a long, hard day. As it wouldn't be used for regular riding I don’t need any bells and whistles, just something easy to fit that gives me a bit of extra oomph for maybe 20k of riding.

Does such a thing exist or is it all a bit complicated?

Cheers.

Depends how you define "cheap" You could get a cheap wheel motor. but they are a bit crap. You can get mid mount motor kits . cheap in comparison to a proper ebike but still a good few hundred but a lot better riding experience than a wheel motor

discussion on the tongsheng kit here. took me a couple of hours to fit

Thanks tj, I suspect what I'm looking for doesn’t really exist but I'll have a look at that thread.

I'm selling a Charge fatbike with a Bafang 500 motor for £750 if that's of interest. Good nick, with a gert big rack for the gear.

I bought it for much the same reason as yourself.

I really wanted a smaller, 29er but the Charge came up locally.

When a 29er with a Bafang 1000w appeared on eBay, I bought that, hence the fatty being for sale.

Hard to fault the Bafang for the intended use. I can wheech up the hill behind the house to 1000ft in 17 minutes then walk from there.

I'm up in the Highlands, but could post.

A rear wheel motor kit can be fitted and removed fairly easily - front wheel even easier but you could run into difficulties fitting. I have not used any of the wheel kits but woosh bikes have some and they gave me good service ie

Yo0u can get much cheaper from international sellers

I'm after a front wheel motor but not managed to get past the fact they all seem to come with BB sensors that aren't HTII compatible and with skonkey cable brake levers.

Interesting idea for my commuter if it ever makes it to market. Not cheap, mind.
