Hoping to join a friend out in Whistler but having just finished uni and being unemployed I have very little beyond flight/bike park pass money.

So tell me about your cheap DH builds and convince me that I'll make it out there this summer!

Find the Vancouver classifieds - probably Pinkbike and check them with exchange rate first.

Pinkbike, southerndownhill, descentworld and here sometimes are all places to look.

I got a full guild Giant DH (04) for about £350 (downsides its heavy and had 100mm BB)

Either look out for a complete or frame/fork

How long are you out there for? Would suggest avoiding multiple pivot bikes as at that age most of the bearings are probably dead.

Check on Pink Bike, I have seen bikes as low as 3-4 hundred that will do as long as your not bothered about make / model etc.

I bought this the other day and for 700 bucks it came with a hardly used moto helmet, almost un-used MRP G2 chain guide and spare brake:

Granted it needs a bit of loving in order to get it running sweet (currently happening...) but it should be great as an old hack bike.

It is worth pointing out that many bikes over here (BC) have been beaten senseless so check them over very carefully. I see no end of cracked frames in my job.

If you can't find a used bike that hasn't been been beat, the Airborne Taka is the cheapest new DH bike going.

It is available direct from the manufacturer only, so you will need to assemble it. It is an older design, and the suspension won't have all of the adjustments and other features that higher end stuff does. But the whole bike costs less than a top end DH fork, so what can you expect? MBA reviewed it last year here.

Edit - short writeup here as well
