Token mtb bb (they do road ones too)
20 quid and replaceable bearing much like Hope.
They don't use those silly plastic top hat spacers that bridge the gap between the crank axle and bearing ala shimano etc.. Instead they use 6805r bearings which sit directly onto the axle. I've got them on 5 of our family bikes with no complaints. The first one I bought over 3 years ago and I've only had to change the nondrive bearing once so far.
6805 bearings measure 25/37/7 whereas 6805r measure 24/37/7.

I'd rather have the top hat, it's there for a reason... So I'll recommend what I use, Gusset EXT24. Usually about £24 (don't get the ceramic, it's not that good), uses a standard bearing so is cheap to run, better sealed and more reliable than XT out of the box too (and you can remove the tophat and clean it out if you want- I don't make a point of doing this but I like to every time the cranks are out)

Downside despite what I said about tophats, is that you have to be careful when removing them. They can withstand a lot of damage but eventually they do give up, and Gusset annoyingly don't sell spares. But that's minor.

My bro bought an uber BB but it has not lasted very long at all. Couple of hunderd miles tops! He has had to replace the bearings already. I have a Gusset one here ready to go into mine when the Shimano one fails (again). I can test fit the top hat from the Uber BB into the Gusset as they do seem to be available as spares.... Sure I read they are interchangeable.

Has your bro had his frame faced to ensure the BB is sitting in it straight?

Gusset lasted less than a month for me on a winter filth use singlespeed, never hosed or washed. Deore are dead in 2-3 rides. Race Face just as bad.

I can get a whole winter out of the XTR, my riding colleagues swear by the hope BB's if you can afford it.

Sod that, the need for mass facing is a myth

Most HT2 BBs are dying because people overload them with preload.

Yup, never had an XTR die prematurely. Cheap as (post brexit) chips from the Germans (probably £20+ now).

Is probably true. I've had frames faced and quite a lot of material removed (and not just paint), equally I've frames that haven't been faced that have never worn out a BB.

Most BB's use normal cartridge bearings which are intended to have NO preload at all. They only take any significant load radially.

Shimano use bearings which resemble cup and cone bearings so can take axial loads too, so need to be pre-loaded EVER SO SLIGHLY.

The only BB's I've ever killed quickly were superstar. And they were fine once the bearings were replaced with SKF ones. But that made them more expensive than XTR which out last anything else on a miles per £ basis.

FWIW, my SSC HT2 BB lasted about 5 years though I did have to clean them out and regrease a few times to keep them smooth.
